This is the power transformer humming, sometimes when transformers get older you get vibrations in the windings due to magnetic fields generated within the transformer which causes the humming noise, It's more annoying than anything and won't affect the operation of the microwave.

Can the transformer be replaced at a reasonable cost?

  • Owen Barnes Mar 07, 2012

The cost to replace the transformer would be about equal to the price of a replacement microwave

That's almost always a defective filter capacitor on the control circuit board.

We regularly repair such control units for customers nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week or so with a one-year guarantee.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number from the tag on the unit) for more information & help.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

SOURCE: Microwave Buzzing

It is not safe. If a microwave oven cooks without the cooling fan running, then your magnetron will soon overheat and be destroyed. At our Web site, we have important safety information plus information on diagnosing and replacing door switches. Our site is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk If it;s not a door switch, then it may be a problem (such as a bad relay) on the control board. We repair these nationwide for $32.50 postpaid in most cases, and you can find out more through that link, too.

SOURCE: GE Spacemaker XL1800 hum/buzz noise but heating works

were you able to replace the magnetron? Did it fix your problem? I have the same issue, and so I wanted to find out from someone who possibly tried it firsthand!

GE over the range microwave buzzing then blowing fuse

If the buzzing is like the sound of someone using an arc welding then the is a possible loose connection on the high voltage side- from the HV transformer to the magnetron.

Be very careful. The HV capacitor can give you an electric shock even when power is OFF.

My microwave is making a loud buzzing sound. Inside the microwave, on the upper right side, is a square area with holes in it. It sounds like the buzzing is coming from behind those holes. Also, after...

THe buzzing noise is most likely coming from the magneton. The magnetron is the main component of the unit (it generates the microwaves). Replaceing it can be very expensive. You may be better off getting a new oven. Prices for new microwave ovens have dropped significantly.

When the microwave is plugged in but not running there is a buzzing/humming noise. The unit works fine and the buzzing/humming continues when in operation as well.

That noise you hear is loose laminations in the standby/controll transformer. It is no more than a nuisance.
The transformer can be replaced by contacting the manufacturer and browsing for a dealer near you.
Hope that helps.

Works - but the sound has changed

Possibly, the "fault" was the buzzing in the first place! Buzzing is usually a cabinet vibration caused by magnetic fields from the "gubbins". If the buzzing should occur again, try pushing/ pulling/ poking the cabinet while the oven is running, you may find a position that causes the buzz to stop.
Another possibility is you previously had something else placed in close proximity to the oven.
If a rattling cabinet is the problem, either try to reposition something, or just ignore it!

Microwave hood combo

hi

power spikes are very damaging to a microwaves internal parts, it sounds like your transformer and/or magnetron are blown. if the unit is out of warranty I would reccomend getting a new microwave and also get a small single plug surge protector for it.
