SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 320GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive - Blue Logo

My SimpleTech 320GB external hard drive turns off and on randomly

The unit keeps turning off and on when I'm trying to copy music files to or from iTunes. ItI seems to work well at first. It starts up, it shows up in "My computer." But in the middle of an operation, it just goes to sleep at random intervals and the file transfer is incomplete. Then it will randomly start up again, and Windows goes through the whole "external drive found" rigamarole every time. We've tried to use the drive on four different computers and both XP, Vista and Windows 7. Same problem. So frustrating.

Actually, the problem doesn't only happen with iTunes or music files. The hard drive cuts out randomly no matter what data I'm working with. Also, the problem is NOT with the power or power cord. The unit gets constant power from the correct cord.

The hard drive has an intermittent problem, the issue lies in the circuit board not the hardware, if the board can be accessed there may be a chance that a soldering iron touch up may solve the problem. But as a rule they are not made to be serviced.

SOURCE: SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 320GB Power up problem

It could be that it's internal power supply burnt out,
in which case the drive itself could still be fine.

Try opening up the external case, and removing the drive.
Once you do, plug it in to your computer directly using its SATA cables, and see if that works.

Hope I helped,
Tom

Did you try plugging it into another computer? If it reads it on another computer then you can transfer your files. External Hard drives always fail sooner or later. Hope this helps.

I just got a new laptop and I no longer have my softward installation disk for my simpletech 320GB external hard drive. I've gone onto simpletech.com and am having trouble finding the software program. ...

If you have a new laptop, you should not need the install disk to see the drive as the drive is USB 2.0 compliant.

And no, nothing will get erased unless you erase it on purpose.

Plug the drive into you laptop (USB cable).

Plug power into to the external drive.

Turn the drive on.

It may take a minute or so but your laptop should recognize the drive. It will get assigned a drive letter (assuming you are using Windows).

I have uploaded everything on my Mac laptop hard drive to my SimpleTech external hard drive. I removed most of my music (in iTunes) and some other files to make room on my Mac. Now I'm having trouble...

You may need to tell iTunes where your iTunes media folder location is. You can do this in iTunes, go iTunes>Preferences>Advanced Tab>Change button, then navigate to where your iTunes media is and choose this as its location.

I am using simpletech 320gb for last 1 year.now the speed of copying and pasting files is very low......what should i do to increase the speed?

The drive may have gotten badly fragmented. Connect it to the PC, and run defragmentation, say, overnight (may take long with an USB drive).
You can use the defragmenter built into Windows (found in drive's Properties, Tools tab), or better use a 3-rd party solution, like DiskDefrag.

There may be other causes as well, but defragmenting the files/folders on the disk would be my first move. Good luck :)

PLEASE HELP

It is just like any other disc drive. You can set up folders to store your music. You can store music, files, videos, whatever you'd like.
It should be assigned a drive letter like d: e: or f: You can simply copy your music files to it.

Be more specific as to to how you are trying to use the Simpletech drive to store music.
