Model: smc8014w-g Broadband Wireless Gateway is what it says on the front - brand SMC Network. I have found out the password (Network Key) is encrypted with a WEP - which I found out what the key is by going to Wireless > Encryption > WEP Key... If I'm looking at it right. So how can I use the WEP key to "hack" into my own system to see what my real Network Key is so I can join my own network for iPods & Kindles, and such? That's all I want to do & I lost the Network Key (password in layman's terms). Ugh. Contacted Time Warner Cable (internet provider) for help too, but sure I can do this myself... Thanks for help. Go to dos prompt in a windows pc and type in ipconfig and press the enter key to find the default gateway address
it might be 10.0.0.1 or 192.168.0.1 these are the most common. Type the ip address into internet browser to log into the gateway router. There will be an admin user name and admin password. It might be the default or it might be written hopefully on the router case/

The length of the encryption key will depend on what you selected under WEP Encryption. 64-bit encryption 10 characters 128-bit encryption 26 characters 256-bit encryption 58 characters (available on DI-614+ only) The encryption key is HEX, meaning 0-9 and A-F are valid characters. For example, A4583DFF1A (64-bit HEX key). Step 5 Click on the Apply button then click on the Continue button to save your settings. 1. Log into your Wireless Router or Access Point.
Open your web browser and type in the IP address of the Wireless
Router or Access Point. (The Router’s default is 192.168.2.1, the
Access Point’s default is 192.168.2.254.) Log into your Router by
clicking on the “Login” button in the top, right-hand corner of the
screen. You will be asked to enter your password. If you never set
a password, leave the password field blank and click “Submit”.
Click the “Wireless” tab on the left of your screen. Select
the “Encryption” or “Security” tab to get to the security
settings page.
2. Select “128-bit WEP” from the drop-down menu.
3. After selecting your WEP encryption mode, you can type in
your hex WEP key manually, or you can type in a passphrase
in the “Passphrase” field and click “Generate” to create a WEP
key from the passphrase. Click “Apply Changes” to finish. You
must now set all of your clients to match these settings. A hex
(hexadecimal) key is a combination of numbers and letters from
A—F and 0—9. For 128-bit WEP, you need to enter 26 hex keys.
For example:
C3 03 0F AF 4B B2 C3 D4 4B C3 D4 E7 E4 = 128-bit key
4. Click “Apply Changes” to finish. Encryption in the Wireless
Router is now set. Each of your computers on your wireless
network will now need to be configured with the same
security settings.

In onder to obtain this information you need a computer that has internet connection through the router, if you have a main computer that is wired through the router then use that computer if not try to hardwire the laptop to the router(plug it to any of the number ports that say ethernet/lan). Access the setup page of the router by typing 192.168.2.1(deafult IP address of the router) on the address bar of your browser(i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari), type admin for the username and leave the password blank. Go to the Wireless Settings/Configuration tab of the router and verify the security mode(WEP or WPA)

Press and hold the reset buten for at least 30 seconds, this reset the router to factory default.
Then its just all over again, but do remember - by cabel, NOT wireless.
