Samsung RS2555SL Not Cooling/Compressor won't start and cycles.

I wanted to post my problem and solution to help others. My Samsung RS2555SL that was purchased in March '03 stopped cooling in late October '08. I would just hear a clicking sound every few mins. After I pulled the refrigerator forward and removed the lower panel I discovered that the compressor would try to turn on every few mins but then the overload would click/spark and it would stop. The compressor was also very hot to the touch. I removed the black cover from the left side of the compressor covering the three wires. When I tested the voltage going to the red wire on the top it would read 120 VAC. I then put a clamp on amp meter around the red wire and discovered when the compressor would cycle to turn on it would pull 14.5 amps until the overload broke the connection. Then a few mins later it would do the same thing again over and over again but the compressor would never start running. So all you would hear is a clicking sound ever few mins. I tested the other two wires going to the relay and it read around 34 volts. I then removed the relay and was reading a direct short across the two terminals. I called up a local appliance parts shop and they told me to bring the relay in. They were able to match up a relay that would work even though it was not an official Samsung part. The replacement I purchased was made by MARS #32330 Solid State Motor Start Relay 1/12 to 1/3 HP. So you might be able to acquire it locally. I paid only $19.99. You can also get the official replacement from Samsung at Sears Parts for $29.99 Part # DA35-10013Q.

Here is a diagram, it is number 31.
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/displaySubComponentFullSize.action?imageUrl=http%3a%2f%2fc.searspartsdirect.com%2flis_png%2fPLDM%2fM0612086-00012.png

Note that the MARS relay has two extra connections on the bottom. You can just ignore those and only connect the two wires at the top and it works fine. After I put the new relay in it started right up and my refrigerator was cold again in no time! Hope this might help someone. Here are some pictures attached.

Thanks,
Jonathan

We had the same issue as Jonathan75 (bought same model in 03,stopped cooling Thanksgiving day 08)and after reading his solution we located a used relay to test his theory.
Our fridge compressor revved right up the minute the relay was replaced.

Saved us from having to buy a new fridge! Thanks Jonathan!!

I had the same problem, used the solution by jonathan and it worked to a tee!

    Jonathan,

I think that I have similar problem with RS2555SL refrigerator, where the relay switch is not working. One tech came and told that it is the compressor that went bad. I thought that I would try to replace the relay switch and see what happens. However, I couldn't take the old one out. Can you please provide me step by step process. I appreciate your kind help.

    Many thanks,

    Malay

I have the same problem, but I need help on how to replace the relay. I can't remove the plastic cover (part #32 on the diagram). Can any good soul help this clueless newb? Thanks.

Wow I just checked back and saw so many people fixed the problem from my post. Very happy to hear that. Hope more people may read this if they have the same issue.

litosandiego, if I remember correctly the plastic cover has some clips on it. Just takes a little tug and it should come off.

malayghosh, just pull on the relay and it should come out.

Jonathan, this is STILL helping people in 2017. Samsung RS2533SW fixed today for $18 and an hour drive. Curiously, the NEW part registers a short across the terminals, while the old part registers about 700 ohms. Old one clicked loudly, new one does not. THANK YOU!

Just found this article and ordered the part. Hope it does the job. Have the same symptoms as described!

Jonathan is the solution!
It has been 24 hours since my fridgerator has started with the occasional clicking then not cooling. I started on the google hunt and found this website with Jonathan's post. I am a 26 year old female stay at home mom of 2 toddlers. I printed the page of Jonathans success and took it to my local parts store. I purchased the Mars start relay for 16 bucks. I pulled the refrigerator out from the wall and took the back apart and followed Jonathans instructions and I had success. You are a savior! I could never afford a repair man. Thank you so much for your post!!!

High five for Jonathan! Fixed my problem perfectly!

To help others, I note that the hardest part of the repair was taking off the black plastic cover. I could not wiggle it off, and tried to release the clasps, but in the end had to force it off breaking parts, and hurting my hand. Below are some pix that may help you understand how to remove it.

You're the BEST!!! This worked like a charm. I couldn't locate either the Samsung DA35-10013Q or the Mars 32330 but one of the people I contacted told me that the Supco IC102 was a substitution. It too has 4 terminals. I used the top pair of terminals. I popped it in and wala FIXED... My cost $8.55 + tax. Under 10 bucks!

Johnathan is the MAN!!!

Ordered the part, and to my amazement it was delivered the very next day, from AppliancePartsPro.com. $14total including shipping.

The repair guy wasn\'t due until the next day, so I tackled it the night before, after clearing/dumping out about $500 worth of spoilage. Pushed out the fridge, unfastened the bottom back plate. One the bottom left, you\'ll see the big compressor, to it\'s LEFT, you\'ll see a black box about 4x3inches in size; it\'s clipped pretty strongly, so you\'ll have to jiggle jiggle jiggle until it comes undone. after you remove this cover, you\'ll see the relay. jiggle it back and forth, as it is attached via to round prongs. after that remove the wires off the old relay and attach them in the same order (to the same number--- essentially fool-proof) to the new relay. plug the relay back into the the prongs on the compressor, reattached the black plastic box. and replug the fridge back in!!!

There you\'re done... and you just saved a few $hundred dollars. I\'m certain the repair guys would never know to check the relay, as they go straight for changing out the compressor.

One thing the scared me after the relay was swapped out, was the fridge sides and center post became super hot.. i thought maybe there was another issue. I think that\'s just the heating coils in those areas, so the doors and sides do not produce condensation.

after 12hours the ice came.. the doors were cool, the fridge working like I left it.

I purchased a Samsung side by side refrigerator; model RS2533sSW/XAA in 2003 and it stopped working in Jan. 2011. I pulled the refrigerator out and removed the back panel to see what was wrong. I unplugged and re-plugged the power again. The fan turned on and then the compressor relay clicked and stopped after about 20 second and stopped. the same thing repeat over and over again. The compressor was very hot to the touch. I thought it was the running capacitor went. So I bought a new one and plugged in still not work. I have call Samsung and setup in home service to have it fix. They told me that it will cost $100 for diagnostic and $100 flat rate labor plug cost of the part. That will cost at least $250 for the repair. So I did some online search and found Jonathan75 's post on Oct 31, 2008. He has exactly same problem as I had with mine.

I replaced the relay that was on the side of the compressor with a used part that I removed from other refrigerator with little modification. It works when I plugged in. I know that might not be the right part for it, but at least I know that wasn't the compressor went. I found the original replacement part DA35-10013Q from Samsung parts website. https://samsungparts.com I paid $8.95 plus shipping. I will put the original when I receive it. Saved me from paying $$$ to service person, thanks a lot Jonathan!!!

Many Thanks

WeiLin

Thanks Jonathan! Our 6-1/2 year old RS2555SL quit on us last weekend. There's only one Samsung authorized service center in LA. I ended up ordering the DA35-10013Q relay online at encompassparts.com for $6 + $7.50 UPS ground shipping. Since it shipped out of LV, it was here the next day!

A couple of additional notes:
1) The relay cover mentioned by litosandiego was a REAL PAIN to remove considering there's not a whole lot of room to work with. There are three retaining "clips" (one on top and one on each side) holding it in place. Apparently they're disengaged by somehow lodging something through each of the three slots on the cover. After trying unsuccessfully with my motley assortment of on-hand "tools" (nail clipper handle, Swiss Army knive, screwdriver, hammer, letter opener...), I was determined to simply break the cover off. I did however manage to pry it off after much effort. Anyway, just be CAREFUL not to damage anything else in the process, or else you'll be in really BAD SHAPE!

2) When testing the relay at room temperature, it's supposed to read a short across terminals 5 & 6. I was getting a little resistance which was apparently enough to prevent it from starting up the compressor.

Kudos! $13.50 + ~$100 in spoiled food vs. $$ for a repair man or $$$ for a new fridge. Thanks again!

Thanks for the info! I also ordered from encompassparts.com for $5.64 s

Regarding the resistance, I measure the same thing. 700 ohms on the bad part, direct short across the new part's terminals.

You should also change the run capacitor along with the relay. If not, you may have another failure. The capacitor should be located by the circuit board which is under a panel just above the compressor on the back wall.

Thank you Jonathan! Your solution has saved me $95 for a Samsung service repairman to check the fridge and an estimated $300+ to repair.

I too have a RS2555SL purchased in 2003, had the same problem you indicated. The relay cost me $11 and am thinking of ordering another in case this happens again. The relay broke on a Friday and we couldn't order until a Monday. Better safe than sorry.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Jonathan75 - I appreciate that you posted this. My RS2555 started getting loud ... I ignored it ... then the 'fridge side was about 58 degrees! I rebooted it and then I had an old school ice box. I searched and searched - found your post and ordered some parts ASAP.

Just another VERY happy person who performed an inexpensive repair himself.

We owe you!

Hi!
A relay starts the compressor with a higher voltage and then quickly kicks out
It does a lot of clicking (trying to start over and over again)
If thats what is happening with yours
Its best for a tech to replace The relay but you can do it
Take your model number to your Local Appliance parts store they will have a diagram
showing you how to install the relay. Its called a hard start relay
I use part no ERP410 POWER START RELAY, CAPACITOR AND OVERLOAD all in one. (110 v)

The Compressor won't start

If you have one try it ,if not , replace the relay which is the one that usually fails in this type of compresors .if still won't start , the compresor is either burned out or stuck and needs to be replaced.

No cooling

I would first check the defrost timer...It may be stuck in defrost position and not advancing to the cooling mode, a common problem...There is a slot, clutched cut, to keep it from being turned in the wrong direction and if you can get to it, place a screw drive in the slot and turn it slowly until you hear a click and/or the compressor start...Some timers are located in back, some in front( bottom), and others inside the refrigerator close to the thermostat...If this does the trick a new timer may be in order, but often it may not happen again...I would replace it anyway to keep from losing food...If the compressor does not start, it may be a bigger problem and usally the overload, especially after a storm with a power off on situation..Overloads burn up from to much amp draw, starting, or trying to start the compressor to soon after it stopping...The compressor pumps up on one side and pulls in on the other creating a pressue difference that must equalize on the off cycle for the compressor to start again...If the off cycle is cut short, like a power off/on situation, the load is to much for it to start until the pressures equalize on the off cycle...Hope this helps.
