My optiplex was used when I purchased it, it's got a pentium D 2.33 ghz. The power supply is working perfectly, I just put a new one in..... previously the auxilery power light had gone fritzy and began blinking amber constantly. The USB ports are undamaged and clean, the computer was working perfectly for over a year. Hard drive is booting fine in a seperate machine. No cords disconected or malfunctioning as far as I can tell, but when I push the power button, nothing happens. I'm wondering if it's the CMOS battery but it doesn't seem to make sense to me.... Though it's possible. Is it possible the power button BROKE? The only light on the machine with a working power supply previously tested, and retested on a seperate machine, is the auxilery power light on the motherboard. It's steady amber. I unplugged all RAM and reinstalled each seperately, trying all 4 slots. Nothing works, all components are factory, on board equipment. This is the form factor case. Dell Optiplex GX620 has a failure power supply. A some of the capacitors inside it are poor quality :( .In this case is an emergency procedure to start power supply (ie. for backup) : make a temporary shortcut between green and black wire in main mo-bo connector (24 wires) , and use normal Power On button. When main fan starts remove temporary shortcut.
The only time the CMOS battery would cause the PC not to power up is when the jumper for the CMOS is in the "Cear" position. I sense from your description of your problem, that you are familiar with the inside of your unit. I would suggest that you take the connector from the power switch off of the motherboard, then take a straight slot screwdriver and short the 2 pins for the power on the motherboard. If the unit turns on , then it is your power switch.
If it does not power up. I would remove all the boards from the unit and try to power up.If it powers up, put the boards back in one at a time, make sure that you power down/up when you do it If it still does not power up,disconnect all the cables from the hard,cdrom,floppy on the motherboard, Just leave the power connector on and then try to power up.

FANTASTIC! I have been trying to find the fault with a GX620 USFF from eBay which had exactly these symptoms - just the aux amber LED on the mobo and nothing else. Had already tested CMOS battery ok. But just removed jumper from 'RTCRST' with power connected and hey presto - it sprung into life. Thanks.

Yes its true.. i have three GX620 at work that wont power on but if you manually switch the PSU alone the green & black wire shorted and it will turn on. I've tried using PSU from good gx620 and it does work.
It's the power supply...If the power light is flashing amber 90% of the time that is the PS is toast. I've had to change about 25-30 of them at work so far. Be warned it Can take the MB with it...but that hasn't happened to me yet...
These machines are well documented to have a problem with the capacitors on the motherboard. It cost Dell over $300 million to replace boards under warranty but they are out of warranty now. If you have a machine with either blinking power light and no display or a machine that locks up during boot then check the capacitors on the board. Here is an article showing what to look for and what to replace to repair the board. If you can solder then you can do the repair, You need to replace 5 capacitors.

So far I'm still getting the same problem, the ONLY thing I haven't done is replace the CMOS battery as well as completely replacing the power button...... it's become irritating.....
Now wait, I'm wondering, at one point in order to reset the admistrator password when i bought the machine.... I had to use the jumper for the CMOS, I may check online to find the jumper settings, it's been about 3-4 months since I actually used that jumper setting, ended up not working but one of the jumper settings I used DID..... so perhaps I forgot to put the jumper in the proper possition after *facepalm*......
ok, after all was said and done I checked my jumper settings, all is in the clear..... short of replacing the CMOS and motherboard, I've done everything now that I can think of, did a search on google and found that I've litterally done everything they suggested except for checking for leaky capacitors.... which I don't feel comfortable replacing capacitors and don't have a clue where to begin to try....
The situation before today was the aux power light was flashing, so I checked the power supply..... ends up the old power supply went out. I'm wondering if it's possible when it went bad the whole computer just up and fried...... If you can't think of anything else it's ok, the advice was killer. thanks.
I have the same issue with 2 identical GX620 running a lab instrument. Failed at the time change in US on 1-1-08/1-2-08. Dell says mother board or power supply. thought it might help
We have 2 optiplex Gx620 and they have both failed with the same problem no apparant power output.
Interestingly, I have the same problem (12/08) and haven't used this computer for 6 weeks. The amber light is 'on' on the motherboard, but, no-go on the "on" switch in front. Ideas?
i have the same problem with my optiplex but the difrence is that when i desconect the cable of the mother board to the start botton the hard drive those start but nothing would happen my email is [email protected]
