I have a camera about two years old that has worked wonderfully for occasional use. I now have some type of electrical error where the "change battery pack" sign comes on most of the time when I turn it on. Sometimes I can have it work if I try 2-3 times.Usually the camera will not turn on at all. I can not depend on it at all. I have tried ordering new batteries, but that does not change the problem.
Any help is appreciated before I toss it. I was a Canon fan. . .
Have you actually replaced the battery or not? You said you tried ordering batteries. You can buy an SD550 battery on ebay for about $6.00
Also, the battery charger may be the problem. The charger has sensitive electronics on beaord that can be damged by a power surge, even normal use can eventually take its toll.
The battery will always hold enough power for the camera to to say "please Change The Battery Pack" on the LCD screen.
The camera would never allow the battery to become completely drained, as that would damage the battery.
Last but not least, put some alcohol on a cotton swab and carefully clean the battery contacts inside the camera's battery compartment.
Good luck
