Pretty old camera but I like it. Now it is unable object to sharpen when using optical zoom. The object is only sharp when zoom is at the far left and the far right position. Furthermore during zooming can not be seen that the object magnifies or reduces. Interesting, when using digital zoom, it's possible to magnify object and object are sharp! Any solution? Thanks in advance!
Thank you for quick answer... I'll try to reassembly camera again and see how to get at mechanism ...Thank you for quick answer... I'll try to reassembly camera again and see how to get at mechanism ...
Sorry for such late answer. Camera now works just fine. I reassembled few times the camera and finally it works...Sorry for such late answer. Camera now works just fine. I reassembled few times the camera and finally it works...

Focusing is one of the most difficult parts for every digital camera. Special on the end of the moon, and if the lights are low. Every camera needs sharp contrasting backgrounds and no distracting other high contrast objects in the foreground.
Be aware when you soon in to the end of the zoom range, you can't focus on close objects. Minimum focus distance can be a few meters.
It could be you switched to silence the focus noise, what can be bad for focusing.
See what the manual is telling you about zoom and focus:
When you zoom in macro with a Coolpix camera, you must change the camera to subject distance to compensate because as you zoom in and out, the depth of focus of the lens changes dramatically.
First you must focus the left eye on a given object with the center focus wheel. Once the left eye is sharp while looking at the same object adjust the right eye to be as sharp as possible. The right eye diopter is only meant to adjust for the small differences between the eyes.

Use spot metering & focus when taking pictures of an object.
Set your camera to highest Megapixel setting, Only use max. optical zoom on the subject (do not use digital zoom) .U dont need to get close to object as you can edit/zoom/crop the picture using any photo software program afterwards .
Yes, I do have the same experience but it happens to be solved using the AI focus mode instead the single shot one. We also have to know that the AA of this camera is stronger than the previous generations of XXD cameras.
For the ones saying about not being as sharp as the point an shot, take into account that you can set the sharpening to be as strong as you want with a limit of 7 degrees of sharpening in camera. (but it only works with jpegs)
On most digital cameras you can point at an object centred in the lens and hold the shutter control in slightly, them move the camera to another area with the focus/exposure set. If your camera gets it's focus as an average of multiple points this may be a little tougher.
It will be grainy a bit specially in digital zoom and even in optical zoom to the full level it might become grainy as camera is unable to absorb all the light from distant object......
1. Make sure you are holding the camera very steady when you take the photo.
2. Try increasing the number of pixels resolution to super fine. If this uses too much memory, invest in a larger capacity memory chip. (The one supplied with the camera has a fairly small capacity.)
3. According to the manual, the "portrait" mode softens faces, but there are other modes you can use.
4. Depth of field is pretty much WYSIWYG . Move back and forth and try with and without optical zoom until it looks right.
I think you have a defective camera. I have the 555 and none of my pictures ever look out of focus like that. Especially since those are outside with lots of light. They should be crystal clear. The colors don't look too goood either. Have you just taken it in P mode and let the camera choose all the settings? Have you possibly set some settings that have changed what the camera came with?Something is not right.
