First check the lid switch, a lot of washers will agitate with the lid open but wont spin out. If its not that check your timer and then your water pump. Most likey it is the lid switch.

GE Model WJRE5550H1WW When I press the start button I get lights but the water doesn't start filling. This has progressed from an occasional occurrence to frequent. Am considering replacing the board...

I am hoping you fixed this problem already but if not I here is what I found out last night. My washer was acting similar to what your describing. I hit the start and I get lights flashing between fill and wash. I found out the behind the control panel is a service paper. On this paper it will describe to you how to run diagnostic on the control panel to check for error codes and the functions for the washer(Pump, spin, hot water valve, cold water valve, slow agitate, fast agitate). When test the functions a second LED was lit indicating the pressure switch(also called water level switch) was showing a full load. Washer was empty! I then unpluged the washer and checked for continuity on the water level switch between the termials where the orange wire and the brown wire attach to. I was having sporadic continuity.(explains the flashing lights between fill and wash). If you have no continuity or sporadic like I did replace the switch. It is like $20 shipped on line. I hopes this helps. I spent I good 6 hours on the internet yesterday piecing info together on this because I couldn't find the same problem I was having.

I have a GE washer model # WHDRR418GWW. It is about 19 months old. It stopped agitating and spinning. It will fill with water and the timer/knob will go thru the cycles. But when it reaches the washing...

You have what is called "agitating dogs" there are usually 4 of them at the bottom of the agitator. They have small grippers which lock onto the agitator and agitates. If the washer is ever overfilled or over time filled to heavy this will wear down the nylon teeth on the "dogs". The top of the agitator will spin off, you will see a bolt inside at the bottom, remove bolt and the agitator will pull out. Google "agitating dogs on washer. It will give you pictures for a better understanding. If the belt was broken the washer would not drain, because the belt turns the pump. These dogs are about $5 and honestly easy to install. Good Luck.

Whirlpool model SM 8525079 fills with water but will not agitate or spin

If you have motor sounds after water fill, but no agitation or spin it could be a broken direct drive coupling. If it will not pump out water, there could be something stuck in the drain pump.

Not sure if manifold is leaking

Leaks water...check the pump first. The fill valve and hoses may be the next step. See how to take apart info. With the use of plastic drain hoses on many machines today, this has become a common leak trouble maker. The drain hose can rub the wall or a pipe and this will rub a hole in the drain hose.

Old model rca washer machine...will not agitate/wash the clothes, does spin.

If the washer fills up with water and you hear the motor running but the agitator doesn’t move, the agitator coupling is the most likely problem. First pump the water out by turning the timer to spin. Once the water is out, turn the washer off. Now pull up on the agitator until it comes off (it may be hard to pull off). Now that the agitator is off, you can see the agitator coupling, reach down and try to turn the coupling. If the coupling turns freely, it is striped out and needs to be replaced.

Okay...I'm a little confused on your symptoms. You initially said it fills, but doesn't agitate or spin, but drains.

Then, you finished with the washer filling, no agitate or spin, but now doesn't drain.

Which one is it?

The symptoms you describe are usually associated with the following:

1. Fills, may or may not agitate, won't spin or drain - lid switch.
2. Fills, may or may not agitate, won't spin, but still drains - motor coupling.
3. Fills, may or may not agitate, won't spin or spins slow - gear case.
4. Fills, agitates, spins, but does not drain – water pump.

NOTE: These are the more common failure items with these symptoms.

Double check the lid switch by opening and closing the lid. You should hear a clicking noise to indicate the switch is working. The switch is located under the top panel along the wash tub rim on the right-hand side. If not, check to make sure the lid strike (small plastic piece on the lid itself) is in place. This activates the lid switch when the lid is closed. Also, check the mounting screws along the rim (there are two of them) to see if they are tight.

If the motor coupling were bad, the washer would still drain, but there would be a rattling sound as the washer tries to spin or agitate.

If you need replacement parts, go to searspartsdirect.com and type in your model number in the "Search by Model Number" window. The lid switch can be found under the "Top and Cabinet" heading as item number 11 (part #3949238). Instructions on how to replace are located at the following link:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385199-replacing_lid_switch_whirlpool_top

If you wish to replace the motor coupling, the part can be found under the “Brake/Clutch/Gearcase/Motor/Pump” heading as item number 13 (part #285753A). If you need instructions on how to replace, just follow this link:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385250-replacing_motor_coupling_kenmore_top

Now, there’s a couple of ways to drain the washer. If it’s a simple lid switch problem, you don’t need to drain the washer to replace the switch. With a broken switch repaired, the washer will run and drain by itself. However, if you wish to drain the tub you can use a shop vac to pull a vacuum on the drain hose. This may take a few times depending on the size of the shop vac. These wash tubs typically have about a 35 gallon capacity. If you do not own a shop vac, you can by-pass the lid switch by jumpering the two BLACK wires at the lid switch connector that is connected to the console. CAUTION: Make sure you UNPLUG the washer before jumpering, then plug back in.

I hope this information is helpful to you. If I’m wrong about the symptoms, please post back and update me on what the washer is or is not doing, so I can assist you further.
