IOMEGA eGo portable hard drive won't copy files from mac

My Iomega eGo hard drive will mount on a Mac G5 and let me copy to the mac, but when I try to copy to the Iomega Hard drive it gives me a message saying "The item "file name" could not be moved because Iomega cannot be modified. What gives? When I GET INFO on the Iomega drive I noticed that the premission is for read only. How do i change that.

I can't put files on to the iOmega from my MacBook, with Mac OS 10.5, as listed as 'compatible'. It says that the contents cannot be changed, and the thing is listed as 'read only'. WTF?

I had that problem today with a brand new Iomega eGo portable, and my Mac genius told me that it's a given that you must "bless" a Mac. That means you must reboot anytime you install a new device. So, I did that, and the Iomega works fine, now.

    Hope this helps.

Format your hardrive for Mac OS:
Go to Disk Utilities under the go menu in your finder. Select the external drive and click on the erase tab. Clikc erase again and it formats the drive. You can now copy files onto the drive.

I recently bought a 500gb Iomega eGo portable drive - I intended to use it as a back up and for 'work in progress files' for files from my Windows XP lap top and my mac G5 and prefered the idea of firewire for higher transfer speed - Since the drive is formated for the mac it works fine using firewire on the mac but didn't show on the PC at all - I re-formated the drive on the mac using Disk utilities using the FAT format - The drive now seems to work fine on both machines.

I am having the same issue. But the problem is that I have quite a few files already on the hard drive from my PC--so I DO NOT want to format it, because I do not want to lose the files. But I can not get the files onto the mac, due to the read only, and it will no longer even show up on my pc!! What can I do??

OS X can read and write both FAT32 and NTFS, so it shouldn't be a problem using this drive on Mac.

Is it possible to boot from an Iomega eGo Blackbelt Mac Edition Portable HD and also use it to clone an existing drive? I want to upgrade an existing 160GB Internal HDD in a Macbook Pro 17" to a...

It's possible to clone to this drive, but over the USB interface, it will be very slow. Firewire would be faster. It's also possible to boot from it, but again, it will be slower than an internal. What you've described, however, IS possible.

How to connect iomega ego blackbelt 3.0 to mack and change the partition

Mac decided not to go with USB 3.0 so you will have to use the USB 2.0 Y cable.
Using the USB Y cable. Plug the cable into the device first, then make sure to plug both USB's in to the computer starting with the short side USB then the longer side USB second. Also try using the USB's on the back side of the computer.
Formatting with Mac OS X, version 10.5 or above. 1. Make sure you have copied any needed files to another location. 2. Select Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility 3. In the left hand column, click on the drive icon for the Iomega Hard Drive. Make sure you click on the high level icon, not the second level volume icon. 4. Select the Partition tab. 5. Change Volume Scheme from Current to 1 Partition. 6. Select the format type from the Format drop-down menu. Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) (recommended) or Mac OS Extended. 7. Click on the Options button. 8. Select the type of partition you want to use: GUID Partition Table - for boot ability on Intel-based Macs Apple Partition Map - for boot ability on PowerPC-based Macs Master Boot Record - if you will use the drive on a PC as well as your Mac. Use this option ONLY if you selected PC-DOS as the format type. CAUTION! In most cases, the computer will fail to format the drive as a Mac OS Extended (HFS+) partition using Master Boot Record. For best results, always choose GUID Partition Table (Intel) or Apple Partition Map (PowerPC). 9. Click OK. 10. Click Apply (10.5-10.6) or Partition (10.4). The drive is ready to use when the format completes.
