I have a Craftsman (919.176820) 2HP, 12 gal. compressor. I starts fine the first time, it reaches full pressure and cuts off. When the pressure drops and it tries to start again, the motor lugs and trips the breaker. Do I have a motor or compressor problem?

Your tank check valve is stuck/broke. It's on the tank end of the line from the pump to the tank. It is supposed to close when the pump stops to keep air in the tank and let the system bleed pressure out of the pump so the motor can start when there is pressure in the tank. The part you need is CAC-437-2 and is available through searspartsdirect.com.

IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR COMPRESSOR IS NOT UNLOADING WHEN IT SHUTS DOWN. YOU SHOULD HEAR AN AIR RELIEF SOUND TYPICALLY ON THE SIDE OF THE PRESSURE SWITCH WHEN IT SHUTS DOWN. ITS A SMALL VALVE WITH A TIRE VALVE THAT THE LEVER HITS AND RELIEVES THE PRESSURE FROM THE DISCHARGE LINE AND THE TOP OF THE PISTON.

YOUR CHECK VALVE COULD BE BAD LETTING PRESSURE BACK UP BUT IT WOULD BE BLOWING AIR OUT ALL THE TIME WHEN SHUT DOWN.

IF YOU THINK THE VALVE OR SWITCH IS WORKING AND WANT TO CHECK IT, LET THE COMPRESSOR BUILD UP AND SHUT DOWN, LISTEN FOR THE AIR RELIEF,IF IT DOESNT THEN CRACK THE DISCHARGE LINE AND SEE IF THERES ANY PRESSURE, MANUALLY RELIEVE THE PRESSURE THEN USE SOME AIR AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. REPAIR VALVE ON THE SIDE OR CHANGE PRESSURE SWITCH $30-40.00. HOPE THIS HELPS. PLEASE REPLY. JODY

Probably the check valve has failed. It apparently is where the pipe goes into the tank from the compressor.

I HAVE A CRAFTSMAN 1 HP 12 GAL AIR COMPRESSOR THAT WILL ONLY BUILD 20 PSI THE COMPRESSOR ONLY HAS 1.5 HRS RUN TIME ANY SUGESTIONS

hi there, if the compressor built up a 20 psig and run at 1.5 hrs.then stop.check the pressure switch the differential pressure cut in and cut out limit.adjust the cut out to the corresponding cut out pressure you want but not exceed to the designed pressure tank..this will be done on adjusting cut out pressure screw mounted inside the pressure switch.follow the instruction on the manuals adjusting pressure switch.the run time correspond to the cut out limit of the pressure switch. rate my fix if your satisfied thank a lot.

Craftsman 1 HP 8 gal vertical compressor.919

Sounds like the unloader valve is not working properly. The unloader typically is at the end of a tube going to the pressure switch. The unloader is tripped when the pressure switch cuts off. The purpose of the unloader is to bleed the pressure from the cylinder when the compressor cuts off so the next time the compressor cuts on it will be starting in an unloaded condition.
when the compressor cuts off you should hear a discharge of air for about 3 to 5 seconds if the switch is working properly. The unloader can be adjusted if necessary by loosening the jam nuts and adjusting the unloader towards the lever on the pressure switch.

Craftsman 3 gal., 1.5 hp air compressor: won't auto shut off, builds only 40 lbs pressure, air leaks from the 2 holes in oil filler cap?

The compressor will not auto shut off until it reaches the preset pressure which is usually around 100-130 psi - your problem is leakage of air from the oil filler cap suggesting that you have a failed internal valve.

I started it but when it got up to max 120 it cut off. What should i check? Or do you know where I can get a manual?

Unless I am mistaken, all compressors, with the exception of continuous run, cut off when they reach a pre set max pressure

Porter cable compressor will not restart once it is under pressur

This is likely a bad check valve which is allowing pressure from the tank to leak thru back to the compressor. The compressor won't start because the compressor cylinder has air pressure on it.

The check valve is about the size and shape of a .410 shotgun shell -- it's in the copper line from the compressor to the tank.
