My olympus e510 makes a squealing noise when I turn it on.

When I turned on my e510 I get a squealing noise. I havent cleaned the camera sense I purchased it in 2007. Should I send it in or is there something I can do before spending the $200+ cost?

SOURCE: my olympus turnsoff by itself when in camera mode.

Olympus Tewchnical Support- especially if of recent purchase. If an older camera - then simply buy the next one - repair is not an option.

SOURCE: IR-300 Olympus

I had what sounds like the same problem. The camera was dropped and the shutter was stuck open. Just kept showing error message.
As I felt I had nothing to lose I began tapping it on a soft book and the shutter started to appear. I then shut it just using the end of my finger. When I then turned the camera on again it opened and shut when turned off. It has worked fine ever since.
Seems a rather poor design.
Hope this helps. Very best regards Peat.

SOURCE: Olympus E510, Flash Flicker

If you are in a low lit area with the camera dial set to Auto the flash will do a strobing type of flash trying to help allow more light into the scene. This is called the AF illuminator function. To just go ahead and take the image, put the camera dial to P (program Auto) go to Menu - go to Wrench 1 tab - then right arrow over and then down arrow to AF Illum - right arrow and turn this function from On to Off and then take the image in the P mode setting. No flash flicker should occur.

I have a Blank LCD screen and everything else seems to function fine

The problem you are describing is a problem with one of the chips in the camera that controls image processing. It seems to have failed and needs to be replaced. Following are the instructions to send your camera to Olympus for service.

http://olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_servicerepair.asp

Olympus will charge a flat rate repair fee for this product if beyond the one year factory warranty or the warranty is voided. The cost is $139.85 plus your local sales tax. This covers parts and labor, factory cleaning and diagnostic check, 6 month warranty and the cost of shipping the product back to you is all included in that price.

when the IS (image stabilization) is on, the camera will make a noise or vibration when turned off. also you may try to reset the camera using the menu under custom reset... (make sure you are in P mode when resetting camera

Olympus FE-190 lense

If the internal lens barrel gets knocked out of alignment it will cause that condition. If the camera senses that the lens is not in the proper position or not moving, it will turn back off rather than cause more damage. Pushing on the lens barrel to try to fix it will usually cause more problems than it already has. It has to be disassembled to be repaired.

at this point you may also want to check on your warranty status.

Olympus FL36 flash unit

Hey I have an E510 and an fl 36 flash unit and no problems for a year now.
And no problems at all {knock wood]!
Have you checked to see if all the flash pins are making contact?
Normally I only turn my flash on after I put it on the camera and then turn the camera off and then on again to see if everything is ok. I remember the flash would not communicate with the camera on a shoot and after a while I realized that the flash was not all the way in the hot shoe. Fool around with the flash off the camera first and see. The flash have modes that you have to set up if the mode is set in full manual that might be a problem. There is a button that you have to hold down for three seconds to get in the menu, Get hold of your manual or download one My buttons are fine and have not faded any at all. I realize that the power button an the flash is hard to press on, I do hope I was of help .GOOD LUCK
