EVERY TIME I PLUG THE EXTERNAL HARDRIVE INTO MY LAPTOP IT ASK TO BE FORMATED. I DONT WANT TO FORMAT THE HARD DRIVE AS I DONT WANT TO LOSE THE INFORMATION STORED ON IT.
If the drive works on your main computer e.g. workstation. Check the properties in computer management to see what type of format the drive is in. I had a similar problem with my sons external drive and I just ignored the warning, but it still worked.I hope this helpsregards

There two chances
1. You pen drive might have damaged
2. Either your external drive or PC is affected by some virus which wants any external drive connected to be formatted
I request you to check the drive by connecting it to some other PC other than yours and tell me the result. I can guide you to get the data
