Uninstall the media player, goto windows Market place and install windows media 11. its free and has all the new updates. Providing you have the correct system requirements. If not you can reinstall your old version at the same site and will probably have the required updates anyway.

Media center does not play cds or dvds please help

You have to check your CD/DVD Rom to make sure the device is not faulty.

Open your Windows Explorer, insert any CD/DVD to see whether your CD/DVD is able to read the the disk.

If it cannot read the disk, most probably the CD/DVD rom is faulty and you have to replace it.

How to turn off autoplay?

Any OS
  • If you hold down the Shift key when inserting the CD, the autorun is bypassed. (although it's not exactly graceful trying to insert a CD while holding down keys on the keyboard.)
Windows XP - Solution 1
  • Right-click on the drive icon for your CD drive, CD recorder, or DVD drive, and select Properties.
  • Choose the AutoPlay tab, and choose the desired action for each type of CD. For example, choose Music CD, then click Select an action to perform, then select Take no action.
Windows XP - Solution 2
  • Obtain and install TweakUI (part of the PowerToys for Windows XP package), and then start TweakUI.
  • Expand the My Computer branch, then the AutoPlay branch, and then select Drives.
  • Turn off the checkbox next to each drive letter for which you want AutoPlay disabled.
Windows 2000/XP
  • Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
  • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesCdrom.
  • Double-click the Autorun value, and type 0 for its value. (If it's not there, create it by selecting Edit -> New -> DWORD Value, and typing "Autorun" for its name.)
  • You may have to log out and then log back in for this change to take effect.
  • Note: With this solution, Windows will no longer be notified when you insert a new CD. To make sure the correct icon and title for the current CD are displayed in My Computer and Explorer, press F5 to refresh the window.

Dvds wont play on pc

You can install another DVD player software.
there are plenty of free players on the internet that you can download, or you can buy one at your local software dealer. Once you install this, the newer video codecs should be installed

DVD-ROM drive reads CDs, but not DVDs Dell x-200

It shouldn't be a driver issue. DVD drives are natively supported by XP. What software do you have installed for playing DVD'? Windows Media Player 11 would be excellent, and it's free from Microsoft. PowerDVD and WinDVD are also good, but you have to buy them.

HP Pavillion not reading audio CD

It is possible that this is a drive issue, I've seen drives that one of the optical reader device has gone out, but generally it'e the DVD reader and will only read CD's. It's very rare that the CD reader goes and the DVD reader works. Before you replace drive, if it's only music CD's (you didn't mention program CD's), then update your media player. If it still won't play, then unistall the media player and completely reload it. At this point you can replacse the drive.

Reads all but DVD-Help PLEASE

When you say it won?t read are you trying to play commercial DVD movies or read DVD data disks? If you're trying to play movies then you need a couple of things the first being some type of player program. Real player works as does Windows media player but usually DVD drives come with a striped down version of PowerDVD or WinDVD. If you in fact have a player installed and when a DVD is inserted in your drive it doesn't play it may not be configured to automatically play DVDs. Try opening your player program and trying to manually play your DVD. Let us know if you have any success or if you need more assisted. If you do let us know what player program and operating system you have and any error messages that may appear.
