NO OS stated at all is this XP, if yes say so. or what it is.?

the current drivers are at HP.!
go the install disks, called media kit> (drivers are there for ever)
in that set, of disks, or DVD.

your support page is here, all manuals all driver,
hint get them before the 10year CLOCK times out and then NADA!
HP is slow today... servers, messed up.
but... waiting for you, ah w7 and w8 was used new.
what is yours. must we guess that? w8 is super much different.
so im NOT answer'g for 2 OS , ever. here.
but will say this
the driver controls that ICON in that tray
so if it acts up that is HP drivers and sound apps , not loaded correctly or the PC IS INFECTED CORRUPTED. as most are.
these days.

there are many paths to success to fix task bars, dead.
my Taskbar speaker icon has 5 choices do you have those?
my guess not.
reload the driver seen no your support page.
or Hit F11 and do full OS restore (backup files first)
or use the HP media kit to restore, drivers or the whole thing

1,2,3.

CP the control panel has 2 icons, SOund and Dev, mananger.
click DM are the drives ok./? you said yes, but dont mean much,
i delete them and load the HP drivers from scratch,. only this works best, (SP12345.exe from HP, matching your OS and your sound chip) You do know that they change chips during long production runs right, and you must MATCH them.

THEN SOUND, IN CP click sound.
if you dont need the task bar sound, and control panel can not fix the problem the the drivers again, are bad.

if say the CP , sound windows opens
do you see speakers, are the green check marks checked.?
or is all this dead, what you see, I cant see,
Id have to do it or watch you do it AND CANT SEE.

why not find a windows geek to help you, hands on.

its all here, at HP (we are not HP, here)
100% Pure and real HP. do not use google to find drivers ever, or you WILL GET MORE INFECTED.

HP has real forum , try that?

the mute means, if it dead. clicked? !
it means the driver is bad.!!
or the PCs unstated OS is corrupted.
here is a list of things, no order.
1: the driver is wrong one. not from HP.
or got it from non HP site and is infected. now.
2: the OS is corrupted. (infinite ways)
3: someone played with it and by loading wrong drivers, etc, killed it. (99% fall here)
learn the rules for drivers, ask !first.
4: HDD going bad and is corrupting OS. (obvious solutions)and simple.

infection cures are the ENDLESS story.
1: endless cleaning,, (we have 1 full day long list of fixes, got time on hands?)
2: reload OS. F11 works if not SLAMMED.

    http://www.pcdied.com/XP-sux-sg.html#sla...

really one can say it's 1 true cause
    OS corruption, for sure.
    what caused that, who knows?

what kind and way ? takes skills to find.
HDD tests using LINUX. is smart on old PC of any kind. we test the HDD first.
we run SMART to see if the HDD is end of life now.
    OS bit fiddling?
    driver loads? sound.
or F11 reload os? (infected or DYI fixes wrong)
or media kit reload.? from HP./
or AV scans endless..... days of work. possible.?

power on and hit F11, HP restore.
hammer the F11 key, see? at power on.

you may want to try and reinstall the driver from the manufacturers website. I had to do that with a brand new notebook as the speakers didn't work when first turned on. I'll see if I can locate a link and post again if I find it.

I have a HP Pavilion dv7-1232nr, the mute button and the wireless button on the top touch pad has quit working along with the volume slider. Any suggestions?

My mute button on my hp pavilion dv7-1262us stopped working after I updated my IDT High-Definition Audio CODEC through Microsoft update. The volume worked but the button stayed orange. I went to Device Manager- Sound, video and game controllers then IDT Audio CODEC. Click the Driver tab then click the Roll Back Driver button. This rolled the driver back to an older version but it fixed the problem. This is a Vista machine. Hope this helps.

HP Pavilion Entertainment PC

I was having a similar issue. My volume button worked fine muting and unmuting the volume, the light just stayed red either way.

I went into Device Manager, then expanded the Sound, Video and Game Controller options, I rolled back the driver and it was an instant fix for me :)

Sound decoder

Go to control panel --> system --> hardware >> device manager.
If you have problem with driver, there will be a big yellow question mark in your "audio controller". If there is problem, you have to reinstall your audio-driver.
If it is ok, then back to control panel -->sounds and audio devices. In tab "volume", you can see if your system might be "mute" (do uncheck box of mute). And if your volume icon is not in the taskbar, do check the checkbox of "place volume icon in the taskbar".
You can also modify the speaker performance here.

Have you checked device manager? You may try reinstalling the driver through device manager? Check the audio properties in sound. you May be try running a virus/spyware scan. When something suddenly goes out its either dead, corrupt driver or virus/spyware/highjacker etc. Let me know what happens. Good Luck, Tim
