have you tried logging-in in safe mode? if windows will not load even in safe mode than you have a corrupted OS! this would require refomatting your hard drive and reinstalling Windows, just be sure all your drivers for your laptop are ready. but if you are able to load windows up to your desktop (even with error messages) there's a good chance this could be fix!

How to obtain the latest Windows Vista service pack?

Introduction:
Windows Vista updates are distributed in service packs. Service packs
help keep Windows Vista current, and they can extend and update the
functionality of your computer. This article describes three
step-by-step methods that you can use to obtain the latest service
pack for Windows Vista. However, before you select the method that you
want to use, please make sure that the following conditions are true:
The service pack is not already installed on your computer.
You are logged on to your computer by using a user account that is a
computer administrator.
The computer on which you want to install the service pack is
connected to the Internet.
If you are not sure that all these conditions are true, please see the
"Before you try to download the latest Windows Vista service pack"
section. Otherwise, select the method that you want to use to download
and install the service pack.
Methods to download the latest service pack
Method 1: Turn on Automatic Updates (Recommended for most users)
Method 2: Check for updates on Windows Update (Same as Method 1 but
not automatic)
Method 3: Obtain the latest Windows Vista service pack from the
Microsoft Download Center (Good to use if the computer on which you
want to install the service pack is not connected to the Internet)
Important: Windows Update may not offer the latest Windows Vista
service pack to some users. This issue can occur for several reasons.

Tryied to install service pack 1. error

Run Windows Update again and make sure that you have all of the updates that are being offered. Ignore/untick the SP1 update if it is showing on Windows Update until you install all of the other updates.

Reinstalled vista home basic on acer aspire 5520 wireless

Do you have a disk or the wireless router? If this hasn't been re-installed then the notebook will have no way of connecting to the net.

Good advice from the first expert. After reinstalling the operating system, allow Vista to install updates from the Microsoft site instead of installing from a disk. You did not specify if you had done this. If given a choice of updates needed for Vista, choose only the service pack and no other software initially. After it installs, you can continue on and choose to install additional updates from the Microsoft site.

After installing vista service pack 1 my dvd rom is gone.

Download the latest driver for dvd rom from Acer that will work with Vista SP1. Also try uninstalling the device in device manager and restart your computer. Vista may find "new hardware" and install the driver from its driver pack in SP1.

Your problem: "I have Windows Vista installed on my laptop."

Unfortunately, as with a lot of MS service packs, they can crash some computers. You need your windows vista disk and, booting from it, you can select repair your vista installation. This should take care of the problem. Then don't update to sp1 for a few months.

Acer Aspire 5630

Seems like your VISTA upgrade didn't sucessfully upgrade itself from XP to VISTA. Seems like M$ update program detects your OS as XP and tries to install the SP3 for XP. VISTA only has SP1 released. Its currently stuck in a loop that it doesn't know what to do. Restart your laptop into safe mode by pressing F8 before the VISTA loading page comes up and go to Safe mode and backup your data and use the ACER RESTORE CD OR ACER RESTORE METHOD to help you reload your system back to factory defaults then upgrade back to vista without install any updates or connecting it to the internet.

This is my best solution to get you out of this weird and unusual situation.
