Is it possible to use this system in conjunction with a laptop? I was previously using with my desktop but don't find a connection for exterior speakers on my Compaq Presario. Any assistance is greatly appreciated! Shelley
I managed to connect them to my Dell Latitude without any splitter cables. At first I was getting no sound output from any of the speakers, and to try and determine if it was a hardware error, I connected a pair of headphones to the volume control. After unplugging the headphones I was suprised to hear my speakers playing out of every channel.
To be honest I am unsure how this remedy worked, or if it will work for others. All I had connected to the laptop was the green plug from the audio input cable going to my headphone jack.
Hope this helps.
You can also move the switch on the back of the sub unit to 2.1 and use it without the 5.1 surround feature. I'm guessing the laptop isn't outputting 5.1 anyway so you're not really missing any audio quality in just using the 2 front speakers and the sub.
Since the majority of laptops do not have multiple sound outputs you will need to buy a couple of headphone splitters. Plug the first Y splitter into the laptop headphone port and plug one of the input cables going to the speakers in one arm of the Y. Next, plug another Y splitter in the remaining arm of the first Y. This will provide you with the other two inputs that you need. Plug the remaining speaker cables into the other Y arms. From there it is simply controlling the speakers using the laptop volume and/or the speakers volume. You will not have fader control on a 3.1 or 5.1 speaker system but it will give you what you are looking for. I have this same configuration at my office using an IBM laptop and a 5.1 surround sound system. Good luck. JC
