My fridge makes loud knocking noises intermittently. The knocking noise sounds like someone knocking on the door, and lasts for anywhere from a few seconds to a minute. It is starting to wake us up at night.
Pull the fridge away from the wall and inspect the compressor. Your description sounds like the compressor is hitting something. It is rubber mounted and usually can be pushed away from whatever it is hitting. You do not want to jamb something to stop the noise, as the compressor needs to move freely. Many compressors shake during start up and shutdown, and this is considered normal. Abnormal if the compressor hits something during this movement.
The GE Profile side by side Stainless Steel Fridge Ice maker was making this ' knocking sound' It made this sound at least once a day-in the middle of the night. I fixed the problem by installing a shut off valve in the line. No more water to feed the ice maker, therefore no more noise. I told my wife to go back to the aluminum Ice Cube trays. They never make knocking sounds that wake me up in anger any more.

I have the same problem with my new Frigidaire. I'm positive on this problem, cause I'm only diagnosing by listening. I really don't think it is a mechanical failure of the compressor, cause it would make continuous noise or random noise, not just start-up. I think there may be something with the new units due to the refrigerant change. Keep in mind; the old freon used to be R12 or R22, the new is typically R134, and likely to use txv type expansion valves as opposed to fixed metering. I think there may be something to do with the performance of that valve. Whether or not it bleeds back on shutdown and then has to fully recirculate. Keep in mind, the R134 has a different saturation pressure/temp as well. Maybe a check valve or even a sump heater may help the problem. Like I stated earlier, this is speculation, since I have not truly diagnosed the problem yet.

Check the compressor mounts. They are usually springs mounted with rubber. If they are two loose the compessor wil hit some other metal part when starting up. Shakle it and see what it is hitting. Ajust accordingly.

if it's a Kitchen aid then you need to call a authorized service agency and have them replace the compressor on the unit while its still in the warranty.

Does the sound occur when the compressor is starting or shutting down? and only lasts for a couple of seconds? I had one do the exact same thing. Sometimes it would also wake me up at night. If so, I'm afraid he is right. On the bright side, it worked fine for years. I gave it to a girlfriend when I purchased a bigger one and it is still working today. The only thing you can do is change the compressor, which is probably not $$ practical.
