Problems viewing Hi8 tapes

Hi I have two hi8 tapes which I taped some vacation and wedding footage about a year and two years ago respectively. I use a Sony camcorder (TVR 280 model), and previously (a couple months ago) the tapes were playing back and showing the pic and audio in the viewing panel of the camcorder. Recently I was checking back on the tapes though, and neither of them were showing or giving audio on the panel...the screen just looked blue. I checked the camcorder itself and when I have it on camera mode, the lcd screen shows whatever is in front of the lens, so I ruled out the screen as the problem.

Can you tell me what can be wrong? Is it the tape or the camcorder?

Thanks

Seems video head of your handy-cam is dirty or clogged. Use good quality video head cleaning tape to clean video head.

How can I view hi8 video tapes on my VCR My HI 8

VHS units are not capable of reading Hi8 video. You could have a shop transfer your recordings for a nominal service charge but if you have many tapes you may want to have your own unit repaired. You could purchase another unit second hand but be wary of doing so as the tracking could be slightly different to your own one and you would need a service centre to adjust it anyway. Best of luck!

Hi8 Tape Will Eject but will not forward/record/rewind,

a problem with an electro mechanical mode-select switch there could be a timing problem arised by mechanical problems on contacts inside (an old video recorder problem between the seventies and nineties ) all equipments where tapes or cassettes are used.
A service manual for timing should be neccesary

How do I transfer my camcorders recordings from HI8 tape to a computer or DVD?

Do you have another video camera that will hook up to your computer? In the past, I've connected my old Hi-8 to my Mini DV, recorded the footage from the Hi-8 to the Mini DV and then digitized on the computer from the Mini DV. You will however need some video software like iMovie for this solution.
You can also, hook the Hi-8 camera up to a VCR or TV using the appropriate cable and view it that way.

Tape compatibility question.

Yes. Hi8 camcorders are manufactured to work with 8mm or Hi8 tapes. The difference is the quality of the tape. 8mm tapes will provide about 270 lines of resolution where a Hi8 tape will provide up to 400. For better quality recordings, you'll want to use Hi8 tapes.
