New fridge with fishy odour

My frdge has bad smell especially from the freezer. Food smells as which it got burnt.

  • mktwxl Nov 30, 2007

I have the same problem with my Sub Zero 632 which was installed 6 months ago....over the past month I have noticed a odor coming from underneath, but only sometimes. It smelled vaugely like urine, but we have no pets.

I took the toe kick off and looked underneath hoping to find a dead mouse or something, but did not. I disinfected the floor under the fridge and layed there for the next half hour on the floor with my nose to the space beneath the fridge like a nut for an extended 'smell test'...the odor came and went during that time.

Seems to be related to the fan, but not sure.

Has anyone else had this experience?

  • tbd1 Jan 24, 2008

I do have the same problem with my subzero-about once every other month or so a bad urine-type odor comes from underneath the frig. I have taken off kickplate and inspected but have never found the cause. The odor goes away after a day or so but comes again.

    Help!

I have the exact same problem you are describing, but have a 15 year old Kenmore side by side. Took my drip tray out. While it was a little dirty, it did not seem to be the source of the order. I took the lower back cover off and cleaned my fan blades (unplug first); they were caked with dust/dirt. Also cleaned and vacuumed out the area around the fan and coils as best I could. I believe the one gentleman is right. We have a mold/fungi problem. There is insulation in the bottom that could have gotten wet and be the source. Not sure. I sprinkled some baking powder around the fan; see if that does anything. Let me know if anyone solves this. Smell is nasty.

I have had a side-by-side Whirlpool Refrigerator since Apr 06. I have had the same problem with the nasty odor when the fan kicks on. I called people from American, which is where I bought this thing. The repairman came out and told me to hang a deodarizer on the back - down near the floor where the fan is. He said the odor is not coming from stagnet water laying in the pan underneath. I am currently buying the car freshners and sitting them on the floor in the back of the fridge. I find it ridiculous. Nobody seems to want to help me at American and I have an extended warranty. Maybe if I shut the icemaker down and did not use the water, the smell would go away BUT - this is one of the reasons I bought it.

    very unhappy

I have the same problem too with the smell comming from under the refrigerator. I looked at the back and the only thing I see is a small tube that is connected to the refrigerator for ice and water. A few months ago, my ice maker stopped working but I did not do something about it. I opened the kick plate and looked at the drip pan but it was dry. Does anybody know how to open the back of the ref or should I even attempt to open it?

Has anybody ever solved this problem?

I have a Kenmore side by side refrigerator and it emits a bad odor from underneath when the fan blows. I have throughly checked underneath for a source, but cannot find anything. I need help!!! I have talked with the Sear's salesman that sold me the refrigerator and he told me that he had never heard of the problem.

  • beth524 Jun 26, 2008

I have the same problem--Frigidaire 1 yr old. There is nothing too bad underneath except some dust. Wondering about the water that drips out from the tube underneath into the pan that is not removable.  Is this supposed to evaporate? Otherwise doesn't it just stagnate?  I cleaned and vacuumed under the fride but it seems to smell only when the fan is on.

  • Anonymous Jul 27, 2008

We are having the same problem, has anybody discovered the source of the smell, and if so, what was the solution. We own a Kenmore Elite 44723 that is less than a year old that is producing a horrible smell from underneath. The source of the odor can not be found.

  • Anonymous Jul 30, 2008

I have the same problem. Fan blows out a urine type smell from underneath. Have had service people in and contacted Whirlpool who will not replace the refrigerator although it is only six months old. They claim it is not a mechanical problem. They tell me you cannot take it apart and check the insulation which I find odd. How did they get it in there in the first place? That has to be where the problem lies. Inside the refrigerator and freezer everything is fine. No odors. Water and ice are fine also and we haven't had any spills inside. Judging from the number of complaints I am seeing online there apparently is a problem with these units and the manufacturers don't want to be bothered. I tried baking soda underneath which doesn't work. Smell is only under the freezer side when the fan comes on. You can stick your nose by the refrigerator side and smell nothing just inches away.

I have had the same problem in the past. What I found is the defrosting tray underneath gets the water from defrosting and it will start to smell like urine. I also notice this in stores and I tell my husband, "They need to clean the drip pan underneath." With my previous refrigerators, I was able to pull out the plastic drip pan, clean it and put a little bit of bleach in it and put it back and it was fine for a long time. BUT with this frig I can't get the plastic pan out so I use a turkey baster and put some bleach in the pan. It works. Hope this helps.

Same problem on whirlpool side by side. Can't find drip pan to clean it. I'm sure that this is the problem. Any other suggestions?

  • thoman Nov 15, 2008

we have the all refrigerator by fridgidaire (PLRU1778ES). It is only one year old! Every time the motor turns on a horrible smell comes out from under the frig. We cleaned inside and out, pulled out the frig and cleaned under, took off back vent guard and saw nothing but attempted to clean it anyway. This problem began a week ago and we finally figured out it was the frig. What can we do to fix this. Our house is on the market and we can't have the frig stinking up the place!

  • Anonymous Nov 26, 2008

We have a Whirlpool side by side. The pungent urine smell is so horrible that I know people can smell it when they visit our home. It is embarrassing and I have no idea how to fix it. The drip pan is not removable and I am concerned about the health hazards for my children. Refrigerator is only five months old.

Same problem with Kenmore Elite...HORRIBLE smell, makes me sick to even go in the kitchen now.....PLEASE HELP!!

How do I get the drip pan out from under my whirlpool refrigerator? I can't see any way to get it out from the front or back?

  • Anonymous Mar 17, 2009

I have a Whirlpool side by side and from time to time hear the defrost pan filling up with water. I do NOT have the icemaker hooked up as we have well water. I wanted to empty the defrost pan and took the kick plate off and found that it can't be removed. I tried to take off the water filter at the bottom but still could not slide it out. I proceeded to go around the back and remove the cardboard backing. It is still not possible to remove the defrost pan. If you look at the pan from the front lying on the ground there are instuctions on the pan itself of how to clean it and how to put it back in so I assume that it can be removed but how? It is model number ED5GHEXNO 01.

Take off back. Remove drain tube and clean and put clorox water in the drain pan to kill the mold or fungus. I think I put too much in but sure smells better that the odor.

Hmmmm.... check of course for any little critters that have passed away under there. These things are stored in warehouses and you wouldn't believe what I've found mummified under a frige! The refrigerant gas shouldn't smell if it's leaking out and if it was leaking that bad you wouldn't have any cooling at all when the gas leaked out.

Also check nothing spilled in fridge if it finds its way down drainage hole it will sit in evaporator tray on top of compressor and with the heat grow very smelly bacterial mould growth. not nice! will have to remove fridge and disinfect it or try milton sterilising fluid tipped down defrost hole this will remove bacterial odours.

good luck

SOURCE: BAD SMELL COMING FROM UNDER

check its not the drained ice water which collects on a pan over the compressor. the compressor heat is supposed to evaporate it .that foul smell might be due to that.
if that is the case ,switch off fridge , clean , dry , the pan & see .

We recently purchased a GE gas dryer and haven't had any issues until last night. We noticed when turning the dryer on that you could smell gas in the laundry room. I cannot find a leak and the smell...

i don't know. hook up should have been by a qualified installer and properly inspected and tested.
be very careful. your unit may be under warranty. please inquire about a free service call before using it again.
dryers blow air to the outside so it vents to the outdoors whenever it is running. there may be a small leak and the odour cold be vented which would account for no odour.
be safe and update your home's insurance.

Bad smell coming from fridge

Is there any chance that small food particles have simply fallen into the fan and now trapped near or behind the fan ?

If this is the case, the food may be lodged in such a way that either heat given off from the fan or the fact the food may not be getting cool/frozen any longer, may have sent the food bad and is now generating the smell you describe.

I don't know of any fridge gas that smells like fish or funk as you put it, most are fairly neutral smelling or odorless to a point and certainly would not smell the way you have described.
  • Make sure the area is well ventilated ( run a pedestal fan nearby or open a window ), fridge gas can be harmful, even in small amounts ( especially if you don't know you're breathing it ), and if the smell is as bad as you say, you may very well be gasping for air.
  • Always have someone nearby when you attempt to do your own repair work of this nature, you just never know when you might need their assistance.
  • If you plan on looking into the problem yourself, firstly ensure the fridge is off, and unplugged before sticking fingers anywhere near a fan - plastic or not, i have seen 4 inch biscuit fan take the tip off an index finger of in a fraction of a second, so don't think for a minute because it's plastic, it won't bite.
  • Do not use any sharp pointed or metal objects to remove the fan or it's plastic cover, use fingers or flat blunt objects that can not puncture the lining of the fridge itself.
  • ( trust me when i say i speak from experience on this )
  • Be extra careful when removing the shroud around the fan, it should simply either click in or there maybe small coverings, covering 3-4 screws around the unit.
  • Remove the fan cover, being again extra careful of the unit itself and check around with a flashlight and perhaps even a magnifying glass.
  • If you can not find any offending objects, it is probably best to replace the fan and shroud and call the repair guy.
