1998 GMC Sierra pickup truck cabin fan problem

Fan only works on HIGH. For example with the air conditioner turned on I am either freezing or hot. No low speed working, just HIGH of off.

  • jim3426 Feb 06, 2009

My fan works somtimes, but only on High. I have to turn it off and on 50 times bfore I get anything. I replaced the resistor under the dash (not that)

    What else could it be

I have the same problem. My blower works when it wants to and usually when it is comfortable outside.

I now have the same problem. I have a 98 GMC Sierra K2500. Found water in the blower motor housing. Blower motor is shot (will NOT spin when hooked straight to a battery). Replaced blower motor and only works on high. Replaced the resistor and still only works on high. Could this be the actual switch now or is there something else I need to look into?

Your blower moter is under your glovebox and very easy to replace.I dont think thats your ploblem.I would pull off the dash.It will snap right off without breaking anything. Then pull out the part that holds the selector switch for the fan speed. Then you unplug that switch.Clean the copper contacts.Plug it back in.If everything works again like it should and did in my truck then it is either that switch that is bad or the wiring harness.I would replace that switch.

This cleaning of the fan speed selector plug in solved my problem. The vehicle is 98 GMC Sierra. I stopped getting any fan action. I followed Gixxer386's instructions above--success! -unclip dash, unclip heater control panel from hole in dash, unplug wire harness going to fan speed selector switch. One of the 5 copper prongs looked dark, tarnished. I sanded and blew the plug clean and now the thing works. I can't find the blower speed resistor. Where the heck is it? "By the heater plenum" means nothing to me. I found a relay behind the glovebox and it was clean looking. I didn't replace it because i got the fan working already.

The most common solution is to replace the blower speed resistor. The blower speed switch is probably not to blame here because you state that the blower either works on high or is off. Is the blower blowing high on all speed settings, or is it off until you reach the highest setting? In either case, the blower speed resistor is less expensive than the diagnostics, and once you install it the diagnostics are done! If it doesn't work after you replace the blower speed resistor, the the blower speed switch or the wiring is at fault. In my experience this complaint is solved by the blower speed resistor 9 out of ten times.

Have the blower motor resistor checked, a faulty one would usually cause that problem

When i turn on my air conditioner on my 2002 Buick LeSabre my fuse blows for the right fan. Do i assume the fan is bad? The left fan still works when the car gets hot.

My air conditioner on my Buick has a full charge of Freon and when it is hot out I don't get the cooling power in the cabin as I have it on low switch so when I put the switch on the high the Air doesn't change to cool the interior on high. I had the Freon tested and it still doesn't work properly and I wonder if there is a sensor that doesn't allow the system to cool properly?

Air conditioner fan runs all the time. Turn on key the fan starts. Car is not hot, has been sitting overnight Question how to turn off so it only works with the AC

I would suspect a stuck cooling fan relay. Your going to have to locate the malfunction to get the operation that you seek. Reference owners manual for lcoation of the cooling fan relay and try switching it out.

Cooling fan relay location on a 2005 gmc sierra

If air is hot then cold it sounds like you have a sizable air pocket in the cooling system. This could be caused by a leak or if you have recently done anything to the system without bleeding it afterward.

Kia Rio....fan/heater not blowing air. Air conditioner/heater fan not working.

Check the fuses and relays for heater and AC. If good , a fusible link wire could have burned out.

1995 GMC A/C fan only works on high???

Two possible problems. First the Freon level might be too low to allow the low pressure protection switch from letting electricity get to your compressor's clutch. This is just a 'most likely' reason, there can be others.

But then you definitely have a problem with the heater resistor pack that is mounted in the heater's air stream somwhere behind the glove box. This device allows for low, and medium fan speeds but needs to be cooled or else it will melt and open up electrically. When that happens you 'loose' fan speeds except for high which is 12 volts direct to the heater motor.

This year GM pickups needed the HEPA air filter but did not have one so that all manner of hay trash, leaves and you name it would plug up the air conditioner evaporator inside the cab which in turn stopped enough air flow to the heater resistor pack which causes it to fail and you wind up with no DOT required defroster AND carbon monoxide preventing air flow into the cabin. There is law and how they avoided a class action suit is beyond me but you are looking at about a hundred dollars to replace the resistor pack and heater switch too.

You might have minimum success blowing the trash out of the evaporator backwards after you take it all apart, as a passenger when you kick the 'heater', that is right where you need to go to clean out the evaporator. It's only 1/2 inch thick and on the bottom of the pile.

If you have good air flow on high then you can disregard the blowing out of the evaporator and just concentrate on getting to the resistor pack - we just changed it with the switch panel to get it all done with in one shot. There is an outside chance that fixing the resistor pack/switch will return your compressor's voltage as well, there is no telling how that switch has it's failsafes integrated.

GMC Sierra A/C Stops Cooling After Driving a Few Minutes

It sounds like you either have an condensor fan problem or low freon. The condensor fan is near the radiator. In some cases the radiator fan doubles as the condensor fan. So look there too.

Engine running hot

Possibly fan clutch or clogged radiator/condensor.
To check for fan clutch, hook up A/C gauges, turn a/c on watch high side gauge. 300 psi. and above run water on condensor, if psi. goes down to about 250 psi and holds. replace fan clutch.
If not, check radiator/condensor for dibris outside, and or corrosion inside the radiator.
