Hp printer says to press the WPS button on the router. What's that?

I had to download an upgrade for my hp printer because it sent a message that it couldn't communicate with my IMAX Lion system after Jan 2012. I did that and then the wireless printer won't communicate with my router. I don't know what the WPS button on my router is which I am directed to push. Can you help?

  • Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) is a standard for easy and secure wireless network set up and connections.
  • WPS lets you use push buttons or PINS instead of entering a network name (SSID) and wireless security by hand.
  • Push button: The WPS button is either on the product or a clickable button on a wizard or utility screen.
  • Personal Identification Number (PIN): The PIN is either on a product label or can be viewed on a wizard or utility screen. The PIN is entered for either the router or access point, or for the wireless device that wants to join the network.

I understand the above but where do you enter the PIN in the router setup?

Most WPS enabled access points use this protocol.Press the [Setup] button (B) on the printer. Use the arrow buttons (C) to select [Device settings] and press the [OK] button. Use the arrow buttons (C) to select [Wireless LAN setup] and press the [OK] button. The printer will now automatically search for access points supporting the WPS feature. The following message will be displayed on the printer's screen "Press WPS button of the wireless router about 5 sec. and press [OK] on this printer" Press and hold the [WPS] button on your access point for approximately 5 seconds, then release.
