Cannot add windows components

Went to add the fax software that comes with xp, and keep getting "cannot copy file" messages. files are locked, and cannot copy them even as administrator.

  • Anonymous Jun 28, 2006

i've tried that already, thanks, but there's something messed up with the file permissions in the i386 directory, so even as administrator, i cannot install windows components, even after assigning file permission to the administrator. i've been through the processes outlined on microsoft's knowledge base. the worst part is i have to go in and clear the files that don't get copied out of the registry, because once you try to install them (and fail) the entries get put into the registry anyway, which causes the installer to skip the file next time you try to install it.

This worked for me!
The problem is a corrupted security database. See MS Knowledgebase article 884018 for the explanation. That contains a link to another article (278316) with the method needed to solve it.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884018/en-us
You will need to determine the location of your %Temp% folder as part of the process. This page helped me figure that out.
http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/environment.htm
Once I reset the security database, I rebooted and did the fax service install from Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs - Add/Remove Windows Components and it went without a hitch.

How to remove the popup message from my desktop -You may be a victim of counterfeit software.

Hi, hiddu_hh, unfortunate it seem that a (Software) product, is identified as a Non-License / Non-Certified product. This means that as long as the Software is installed in your computer the message will keep (popping) up. To get rid of the message; the software must be removed / uninstalled. Thanks paul70f9

Hidden Program

In Windows 98 the MS fax client is installed as part of the windows messaging package and uses a mapi client like exchange client, outlook, or windows messaging to work. Try 'add/remove software' in the control panel and see if you can unistall windows messaging. If you have the win 98 install cd, there is a file called wmw-fax.txt in the tools/oldwin95/message/us folder. you might find the information in there.
