Hi the mirror of my d100 is locked up!.....It happened all of a sudden! tried to gently push it back down, turning off the camera, charging the battery...but everything was in vain. When I press the shutter button all I hear it the motor winding but nothing happens. Needless to say that on the LCD the message ERR is showing up! Could any one help please? Thanks Geoffrey

Do you get the 'push shutter button again' or 'turn off and on again ' message? If so the motor in the SQ unit that charges the shutter and moves the mirror up and down has failed. A very very common problem. The part is on constant back order at Nikon, and good luck getting it anyway as Nikon is going to stop selling parts to anyone in just a few weeks.
Normally, you can manually lock-up the mirror for the purpose of cleaning the sensor. To do this, you need to connect the camera to the optional EH-6 AC adapter. If after removing the lens and inspecting the mirror, you cannot gently nudge it back down (do not touch it...use a cotton swab) then you'll need access to the EH-6. If you don't have one, possibly a camera store near you would have one and be willing to let you plug in your camera so you could try to access the mirror lock-up function in the set-up menu.
You will have to take it to a photograpic shop for fixing. Sounds like the moving parts are sticking. Had similar problem with old camera and all the rubber and lubricants turned sticky, causing slow movement.
It's possible the mirror is locked in the up position. Take the lens off, then look at the mirror. It should be halfway down if it's in the right position. If you don't have a warranty on it, and it's in the up position, you could try giving it a very gentle push. It should travel very easily up if it's not broken.
The reason the mirror is acting up is because the Shutter is going bad under slow shutter speeds. > The motor which drives the shutter charge and the mirror up and down is the same .
I don't know if there is a mirror lock up button on this camera or not. Some have it for slow exposes. Nikon does have a technical phone number or place on their website to contact them. I had a D100 that had the ERR message show up on it, and it cost $400 to repair. But look for the mirror lock button.
The R06 is the buffer indication, not part of the error. It would appear more work is required. Other components may have failed, or the shutter itself may be bad.
I'm afraid this one is not a DIY. Nikon is pricey on repairs, you may fair better checking the repair service search here on Fixya.
When you say you put in a new roll of film, did the camera advance the film with the mirror locked up?
Have you tried triggering the shutter few times to release the mirror?
If that doesn't work, open the back of the camera. Turn the film take up spool in one direction...that should release the mirror down.
Turn it also in the opposite direction.
If that doesn't work, reach inside the lens mount opening and pull the mirror (very very gently) down. Don't force it down if it doesn't want to go.
Sometimes that releases the mechanism that freezes from sitting idle for too long.
It is always a good idea to take the camera out and triger few frames every couple of months to keep things lubricated.
Let me know if that fixes it.
AJ.
