Top sections of Freezer and Fridge not Cold at all

Hi,
The first problem we had was with the Freezer. All the items in the freezer would get little fuzzy ice sweaters on them. So I moved the fridge away from the wall so that it could circulate more. Then that problem seemed to go away and then the problem with the freezer and fridge not getting very cold came. The entire unit had a hard time staying could and everything defrosted in the freezer.  We didn't do anything different, we thought it was because we were going through a heat wave here...but the fridge righted itself and started working without us doing anything to it. Then a few weeks later the tops of the freezer and fridge side are room temperature, but the bottoms of both are good cold temperatures.
On the bottom of the unit the fan is working and the compressor is very hot to the touch and it's making noise so I'm guessing it's working.
Inside the freezer there is frost on all of the coils, but the fan is not working.  Is there something I can replace myself to get this working again?
Thank you!

Thank you! I checked the fan and it plastic coupler that connects wiring of the fan was actually not fully pushed together! don't ask me how this happened, somebody must have done work on the fridge before and didn't connect it thoroughly.

    Thanks again =)

    Hi Again,

So the original problem has come back.

Everything gets cold enough now, but the problem of the Fuzzy Ice Sweaters on all of the food in the freezer is starting to come back. Actually it's just the top couple of shelves right now.

Do you have any ideas on what could be causing this? I'm guessing it's some sort of moisture...any ideas?

    Thank you,
    Lil Fixer

Check fan is free to rotate and that it has continuity. also check you have power to the fan.
you may just need to replace the fan motor

ice can only come from air getting in so carefully check seals - a good way is to trap a bit of paper between seal and cabinet

There is a puddle of water inside the refrigerator, beneath the vegetable bins.

How many items are in your freezer? I had this problem and there was too much in the freezer, not allowing the air to circulate properly in the freezer, thus resulting in freeze up in the top (freezer) and condensation below in refrigerator section. Additionally, I had the refrigerator setting too cold, which accelerated the problem. I had to thaw the drain hole in the freezer section, below the fan, to allow water to leave freezer during defrosting stage. Hope this helps?

Refridgerator side not cold freezer side fine

Difficult to properly diagnois with such a brief description, but try the following as a good first step at correcting the problem. Reset the freezer and fridge thermostat settings at the factory default. Also, check the freezer section to make sure nothing is blocking the cold air supply vent into the fridge, do the same on the fridge side too.

Normally is the freezer is working fine, and the fridge is warm, it can be due to either a blockage of the cold air cross vent by items in either the freezer, fridge, or both, preventing proper cold air flow from the freezer into the fridge. Also, check to see if the cold air vent is not frozen or obstructed, with a fashlight (you;ll need to remove stuff from fridge and freezer to make this possible to check.

If the vent is not obstructed and you can clearly feel cold air passing from the freezer into the fridge, it is possible that the cold air vent control has ceased operating properly and needs to be replaced. Usually though this type of problem is caused by people over stuffing things into the freezer section and blocking the cold air cross over vent. Hope this helps.

Freezer not blowing air - bad smell in fridge

Your automatic defroster coil is open and needs to be replaced along with the fan in the freezer that blows the cold air around and also blows air into refrigerator.

Bad smell down below is food rotting in that section because it is not cold enough.

Freezer works great, as it should, but fridge is only keeping items room temp. I have the setting at the coldest setting: #7. What is wrong?

Here's what I did, I defrosted! I found out that the fridge temp is monitored and maintained by the freezer. Because we had a power outage one night, my freezer thawed while we all slept and then when power came back on, freezer re-froze but this cause an ice build up on the vent on the back wall of the freezer. Well, ice must have been in one (or more) vents, causing blocked air flow in my top half of the refrigerator. I turned the dial in the freezer to "off" which also shuts down power to the fridge half. I then unplugged the refrigerator, hauled all my food items into coolers, opened the freezer door and refrigerator doors and left them open for a little over six hours. I took advantage of this empty fridge and freezer and wiped everything down. After this time frame passed, I plugged the fridge back in, turned the freezer dial to my preferred freezer temp, and wah-lah! Within two hours I had a cold fridge and solid ice cubes in the freezer. I then put all my food items back into their appropriate compartments, and went to work. Bear in mind, a total 24-hour period is needed for the fridge to re-set itself, but still, after two hours the fridge was noticeably cold. Who knew, besides our parents' generation: DEFROST!
