Model # L305-S5930
You need a program, like nero.
if that doesn't work then put a DVD in the drive & see if the computer picks it up in the my computer.
the first thing that goes in a CD/DVD-RW drive is the DVD heads, thats if your drive is a CD/DVD-RW.
Have a look on the front of the drive tray, if it say CD-RW DVD ROM then it doesn't burn DVD's it only plays them.

was it preinstalled or you installed it yourself ? either way sorry to tell you but drives do give out, and some times the cd-rom and dvd - rom drives the hardest to fix, but you can research http://www.geeks.com/ and find yourself a new one for around 40-50 dollars...
another thing, if you installed this drive yourself, you can pull it out and check the jumper and make sure its either cable select or slave or master, which ever you want to set it up as....
i usally put all my drives in cable select so the computer will select which drives goes first and things are juts alot easier that way....

If the reading is also bad, then you have a hardware problem. Try to get a lens-cleaning disk, or clean the lens yourself VERY softly. If that won't work, you'll have to replace it.
Be sure to have the "write" or closely to that option selected in your burning software. You may only simulate the write...

If you were to log on to the
manufacturer's
web site, usually one is able to download if
available, by model number,
All available Driver
downloads
as required.
This is the best way of ensuring up to
date drivers for your system and they are free of charge! There
are no XP drivers to be found with Microsoft as XP is no longer
supported. Some
manufacturers may have a limited number of Drivers still listed. I hope this helps. I think maybe that is your answer
