Click on start, then computer (or just My Computer from the desktop). Right click on the C: drive and then click on the tools tab. You will see defragment listed there. Click on it. Please make sure you have your screen saver disabled and are not running any other items while you defrag. If you are the defrag will fail.Alternatively you can download smart defrag 2. Just do a search for it on the internet and you should find the download. This is a much more stable and effective program than the windows defrager.
Good luck and I hope this helps

Not enough back up space

HARD DISK MAINTENANCE TO KEEP COMPUTER RUNNING EFFICIENTLY.
Hard disk maintenance should be carried once a month to make your computer run efficiently. This removes redundant and temporary files, recovers disk space and speed up hard disk access. Disk Cleanup should be done first - Click My Computer - then right click on the C drive then click Properties, then click Disk Cleanup - let it examine the C drive then it will calculate the amount of disk space it will recover, tick all the boxes to recover the maximum disk space and then Click OK and then Yes to perform these actions. If you have a D drive then repeat these steps on this drive too. Next the C drive needs to be Defrag. This process converts fragmented files into continuous files and this speeds up disk access and makes the hard disk not work as hard. Click on Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Defragmenter - click to highlight the C drive and click Analyse - then click Defragment. When this is completed repeat these steps for the D Drive if you have a D drive. Disk Cleanup and Defrag can take a long time to complete, especially if these tasks have not been for a long time.

I completely agree on defragmentation being an oft forgotten or neglected job. A...

Your hard disk drive is one of the most important parts of your PC. It's where all your system files, applications and user data is kept. Most people understand the issue of security, the importance of making regular backups of your user data as an insurance policy against hard drive crashes. Few people realise and appreciate the importance of having regular hard disk maintenance which is designed to keep it in good working order.

The ultimate way to revitalise and cleanse your PC is to wipe the hard drive, start from scratch and then reinstall the operating system. However, there is much you can do to avoid such a situation arising, simply by using utilities provided within the bundle of your Windows operating system.

Disk cleanup
The Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up space by searching your disk for unwanted files that you can safely delete. It can remove all of the following:

Temporary Internet files.
Files in the Recycle Bin.
Temporary Windows files located in the Temporary files folder.
Optional Windows components that you are not using.
Installed programs that you no longer use.

To launch Disk Cleanup via Start menu go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools
slasher_x_4.gif

A dialogue window should now appear enabling you to select the drive you want to clean up. Select the required drive and click OK.
slasher_x_5.gif
The specified drive will be exampined and the amount of space you can potentially free up is calculated.
slasher_x_6.gif
The results, showing the amount of space that can be recovered by deleting files that are not needed are then displayed on the Disk Cleanup tab.

Error Checking
Chkdsk.exe is a utility which verifies the logical integrity of a file system. In the event of the utility encountering logical inconsistencies in file system data, it will perform the necessary actions to repair the file system data. The same utility in earlier versions of Windows was called to as ScanDisk.

To Launch Chkdsk go to My Computer and right-click the hard disk you want to have checked. Then click Properties and select the Tools tab.
slasher_x_8.gif
Click on Check Now.

A dialogue box showing the Check disk options is displayed.
slasher_x_9.gif
Select the appropriate options and click Start.

You may get the following message.
slasher_x_10.gif
If so click Yes and your computer will reboot and then perform the scan.

Disk Defragmentation
Since files are constantly being written, deleted and over written to the hard drive, files are likely to become fragmented and scattered all over the drive. The disk defragment tool takes these files and puts them in order by eliminating spaces between files.

To start the disk defragment tool go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter
slasher_x_12.gif
Then select the Tools tab and click Defragment Now.
slasher_x_8.gif
It should now display the hard drives showing total capacity as well as the free space of the drive(s).
slasher_x_13.gif
Now select the drive you want to defragment and click Analyse.
slasher_x_14.gif
The drive is scanned and a visual representation of how it is currently fragmented is displayed.

Depending on the the results of the analysis, you will be advised as to whether or not the volume should be defragmented.
slasher_x_15.gif
Even if it's not necessary, you can choose to Defragment anyway if you like.

The time it takes to defragment the hard drive is dependent on the size of the drive, how the fragmentation lies and how much free space it has.

As the drive defrags you can see how it is neatly repacking the files by looking at the bottem visual bar.
slasher_x_16.gif
Once it is complete you will get the following message
slasher_x_17.gif
You can choose to view the report which will show hard drive information such as free space, used space, cluster size and the free space as a percentage. Or you can just lick Close as the defragmentation is now complete.

Doing these checks frequently will prolong the lifespan of your hard drive and make sure it's running at maximum speed.

Speeding up a computer by Defragmenting Hard Drive

Is your computer running slow? Have you tried running anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-malware software to speed it up, but to no avail?

Perhaps cleaning up your hard drive could help. This tip will explain, in step by step instructions, how to defragment your hard drive.

To Defragment your hard drive:

1) Go to My Computer.
2) Right click on your C drive.
3) Click Properties.
4) Click the "Tools" tab at the top.
5) Click "Defragment now..." in the middle of the window.
6) In the window that pops up click "Defragment disk"
Defragmenting your disk physically moves files that are similar or
fragmented into an area that will more efficiently use your space.
5) The Disk Defragmentor will analyze your hard disk.
6) After analyzing it will move and defragment the information appropriately.
Disk Defragmentation is complete. You should see noticable improvements in your computer's speed and preformance.
