Ok here goes, i have this piece of S"!T board too. i have had no audio for ages reinstalling this and that and pulling my hair out. i had the realtek icon in the bottom right but no mixer devices etc, no windows volume controls......my problem was SERVICE PACK 3 (i think)! but the fix;

get the lastest drivers from ; http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P5GC-MX/1333

had to instal xp AGAIN with service pack 2.

once installed turn off the auto updates, dont update anything!

now

instal the realtek drivers, then the kb888111 and i also got the sp33867, instal that, i also installed some of the .exe in the hotfix folder, i just installed everything that would instal from that download and i couldnt belive it! restarted an the little volume icon appeared and i had sound!!!!!!!

so i have sound but am affraid to update anything.......things might go quiet again, but i am convinced the problem lies in SP3.

After working on this for 4 days I finally find a simple solution for this sound problem. It is really suprised that nobody discovered this before. Actually, you don't need to update your driver, or use winxp sp2 or something else. I discovered that somehow windows audio is disabled in the services. So to correct this just follow this: Go to Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services and double click on Windows Audio you will see that the Startup Type is Disabled. Just push Start button and don't forget to change the Startup Type to Automatic. That's all. Enjoy your sound. By the way you don't need to restart the system. I am using sp3 and the latest Realtek driver 2.72. Good luck.

I have the same motherboard but its fantastic. no motherboard works better than this. I have an ASUS RAMPAGE II EXTREME motherboard too. its also working great. i think theres something wrong with ur OS.

  • Anonymous Feb 27, 2019

x2, he never told he is running XP infected PC as all are. DUMP XP
load windows 7 and get the correct matching driver from the ASUS support page.
Ive run vast numbers of ASUS, mobo from 1995 to now and never did one ever fail..
1: if the HDD is bad (fails smart tests)
now can any OS run, answer it cant.
2: if XP is infected how can you clean it , you cant. that is hopeless to try.
3: SO I reload XP and it gets infected as I do so keep the internet turned off until you get your fire wall up and AVG ANTIVIRUS LOADED FIRST, OR NEVER USE xP, GET W7
4: THIS MOBO, NEWEST DRIVER IS W7 ONLY
    PROOF HERE:
    https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/P5G...
To test sound (before laying blame)
use earbuds at the green jack at the rear
as you know only amplified speakers work here. or buds or real 3.5mm jack head phones.
    then in windows control panel
    click sound
    the click sound tab
this is windows sounds. click test.BINGO !
if this fails then sound is dead.
next load the correct and matching OS driver, linked above and it works
unless using XP the VIRUS MAGNET.

  • Anonymous Feb 27, 2019

    one more test.
boot to any Linux demo disk (click try me)
Unbuntu v16 up. boot to DVD or uSb stick with ISO burned to it with RUFUS.
see the sound works does it not with 10 minutes work booting Linux you see,gee it does work , all 3 mothersboards worked
    proving that:
1: you are using the wrong audio driver.
2: XP is infected, as all are now.
3: or HDD bad, causing massing XP corruption.

Hi to all . i had this problem , and the solution is simple . remove sp3 or go back to check point at the restore system . once sp3 is removed , windows will install the audio by itself , or instal it from the disk of the motherbord or download the driver from the asus web sight. once the audio is instaled you can install any update , including sp3 , hope it will help you all .

I have just solved this problem. What I did was just remove Service Pack 3. Then I recheck windows update and install all the critical updates minus Service Pack 3. Also make sure to turn off auto update.
Now I have sound! The problem now is can we go on living without Service Pack 3?

Audio driver problem

Drivers don't expire.  Probably what you wanted to say: your OS was updated with a service pack and the driver you have is no longer compatible (extremely rare but it happens). Go to the manufacturer's site - http://www.asus.com/Product.aspx?P_ID=vddABl4wQXZXLyQY&content=specifications - select your OS, select the audio driver and get the latest version.
