I want to edit video. My camera displays a 'HDV/DV' connection when plugged in, but my Mac does not recognize the camera. ?
I've been around the block with this for days, including a fresh installation of the software on my MacBook Pro. Sigh.
Here's what seemed to work:
1) Reset Vixia HV30 (tiny reset button behind the battery). Did not change any settings on the camera after that.
2) Installed Canon's software that dropped some canon-related files in Library/Quicktime folder.
3) Opened new iMovie 6.0.3 and Final Cut Express HD 3.5.1 projects (a) FCE (using Easy Setup in FCE) to Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 (b) iMovie 'HDV 1080i'.
4) Connected 4-pin --> 6-pin firewire cable out of the camera to a bus-powered external drive and from the drive, firewire 800 --> firewire 800 --> MacBook Pro 10.5.8.
This was a last-ditch, Hail Mary effort. It worked, and the camera showed up in the System Profiler firewire window, too, whereas it had not before all of the above. Still does not show up when hooked directly from the camera to the FW 800 input, but at least I can capture now.
Thanks for sharing this useful post.
When you edit HDV/DV formats with adobe premiere, FCP or iMovie, you will find the HDV files are too large to eat up lots of CPU, so playing back these files are really choppy/jerky. In this case, you have to transcode HDV files to other video formats for better playing and editing.
The program I recommend to convert HDV video files is Aunsoft Video Converter for Mac which is a professional in converting HDV files to MOV, AVI for perfectly editing and playing.

DO you have an external hard drive connected? sometimes that imposes on the connection....do you have a hdv compatible software program on the computer....and if you do...make sure the settings for input are correct

After much investigation, I found that I needed to be running iMovie, then plug in the camera. iMovie then recognizes the camera and can be operated from the iMovie controls and downloaded. Unlike my other camera, and most storage devices, the computer does not recognize the camera when you plug it in to the computer. The software that comes with the camera is only for still images and can not operate video files.
I've got the same problem. I'm trying to edit in Final Cut and my imac doesn't even recognize the HV30 when it's connected. WTF? I've had a similar problem with my Canon G7, it only works when iphoto is opened.
my mac doesnt detect my hv20 at all no matter what i do the wire is fine so either i have a defective firewire port or i just dont know whats going on
I have the same problem has anyone found a solution to this??
