Try reseting the toner cartridge via the operations panel.
Do this by opening front door and pressing clear/back button, a menu will appear, we want to select C-TNR-S or C-TNR-H depending on if you are using Cyan/TonerStandard or Cyan/Toner/High Capacity, so use arrows to go to correct one then press ok to select it, then a new menu appears, we want to select 1 and ok to reset, then it should just go back to cover open.
That should do it, have you tried it? as I think I told you the same before, I also need to know if you are using original brother branded toners or refill/remanufactured ones. You can reach me via this question

tried unsucessful. not original.
remmember i took tray out and i recieve the same message. load cyan toner.
I think you need to put in a new Toner, not refill, original brother, and no I dont know anything about taking out any tray. I can only see where I told you to clean contacts, try reset and to try a new genuinne toner, and then if I look at you other posts you have spoken to others about this issue not me.
I have found time and time again that refill toners dont reset the counter for these machines and the fix is to put in a real original non refill one, puting in another aftermarket doesnt fix it.
Ill go now and double check our posts on this to be sure...

original post to me, where I advise to replace toner with a brother branded one.
Here is another customer with exact issue, or a near the same printer as your DCP 9040cn.. the reset work for her..

I suspect your toner still, are you able to see the reset menu and select your toner to reset at least? We really need to try a toner designed by the manufacturer for this machine, unless we do, I will suspect the toner, even if you got 20 remanufactured ones. One brand new, sealed brother cyan toner and I think you problem is gone.

oh ok I see, but I wont do any good without the drum because it is the drum that connects the toners to the machine, and your machine will hold the error condition until it rectified, so Im not sure what taking out the drum will acheive, all i can tell you if it was in my shop, first step do reset, , 2nd replace toner with a new brother branded one, 3rd clean contacts...if that failed I would try another drum, then if that failed one would replace the main board but if it got that far and was not under warranty it would be too costly to consider.. 90% of faults I see on these machines are due to the use of after market consumable stuff that causes most issues, hence my desire to first fit real toners, drums etc as most of time it is the issue. This is what I know from fixing brother printers for over 20years and it is from this experence in the field, not some affiliation with brother that I suspect the aftermarket toner
