You are not saying what version of Windows you are trying to install. There is a common issue with WIN XP installation where at the "33 minutes to go" mark, during device installation, the system just hangs forever. This occurs when WINDOWS is trying to identify and load default drivers for all the motherboard components. If there is a defective component, the install will hang at that point. It is said that after a few successive attempts that WINDOWS will continue past the error, but my experience has not shown this to be true. In my case it was time for a new motherboard.

With both Windows Vista (32bit and 64 bit) and Windows 7 ( 32bit and 64bit) my ASUS p5kSE motherboard "freezes" during boot ( At starting windows screen) I have to re-boot ( or power down) and launch...

Perhaps. It is a very old MB. Are you sure its the computer freezing and not just the video? After a cold boot, try forcing it to sleep with keyboard. If it does sleep wake it up. Does video work again?

OS will not initialize, cd/dvd-rom not accessible in Dos.

I would re-format the hard drive. Then install your main OS such as XP or 98. ( Best to do XP first). Then during installation you can set up your partitions or use Partition Magic.

Then you will have other partions to load other operationg systems. One OS in each different partition.

Then use Acronis Disc Director. On startup Acronis loads a screen and lets you choose what OS you want to use. Just click the icon and away you go.

I have xp, windows 98, and Dos 6.0 on my system in three different partitions.

Good luck

Windows won't load or instal

Freezing of computers occur mostly due to shortage of RAM. But in ur case, 1GB is quite enough for XP. Since ur computer is freezing b4 even starting up, thus it could be a problem of disk drives.check if more than 1 drive have been alloted MASTER (Primary) or otherwise same priority. If u have more than 1 HDD, then the one in which the Opering System is installed should be given the Master Primary and the other as Cable select/slave. Likewise do it for the CD/DVD ROM or RAM (the CD/DVD RAM should be alloted the master and ROM as the slave). It can be done by the JUMPERs on the back of the Drives. See the exact setup on the drive surface.

Installing xp freezes

If it will only boot in safe mode it means you have a driver conflict.
This is only a suggestion but try fresh reinstalling windows, with only basic xp drivers then install other drivers one at a time rebooting each time you do until you come across the faulty one. remove it or check its for xp not vista research net for correct one

DVD-RW drive burns music CDs and DVDs, but not data CDs

Alright. Seems like Windows, for some reason, doesn't think your drive is able to burn things when trying to deal with this kind of disc.

I'll need further information, like if you use another program to burn music CDs, and what other things might have changed the registry settings. I know of a fix that resolves issues with the Windows version of data CD burning, but it only applies to CD-R and CR-RW drives..
