IPhones use a Mini Sim and you open the door with a paper clip folder out or similar object. The slot is on the outside and you will see a small hole where the paper clip can be inserted.Regular size sims will NOT fit in.

I had the same problem with my iPhone 3G. I took out the SIM card, tried to clean the contacts and noticed the SIM card still had a bit of warping on it. Gently removed the warping off the SIM card by bending it a bit then cleaned the SIM card contacts and it has never done the error since.

I believe this should solve your problem.

The sim card goes into a slot that is on the top of the phone. Use a paperclip to take the plastic "tray" out of the phone, put the sim card in, then slide it back in.

The steps are actually outlined on page 119 of the iPhone user manual. But I will just repost it here for your convenience.

Insert the end of a small paper clip (or the SIM eject tool if it came with your iPhone) into the hole of the SIM tray. Press firmly and push it straight in until the tray pops out.

Probably iphone is Sim locked in U.S like in here. So to solve it you need to jailbreak and unlock it, this is nothing very hard but you need to know current software version of your phone. And it takes some time...

How to insert sim card in iphone 3g
Turn off your iPhone 3G and make sure any cords or connector cables are removed from the device. Then, hold your iPhone 3G upright.
  • Locate the Sleep/Wake button and headphone jack on the very top of the iPhone. Between these two components you will see a very small hole.
  • Insert the tip of a paper clip into the hole to release the iPhone's SIM card tray. The small tray will pop up relatively quickly from the top of the iPhone. If there is already a SIM card in the tray, use your fingers to remove it.
  • Insert the SIM card you want to install into the phone facedown in the tray. Make sure the side without the reflecting panel is inserted first.
  • Press the SIM card tray gently back into the slot until you hear it "click" into place. Now turn your iPhone on. All of the information on the card will now be in your iPhone 3G.

    How to insert sim card 3G
    To insert the SIM card into the iPhone 3G you first have to remove the SIM tray from the top of the phone, located near the power button. Use the SIM tray removal tool that came with the phone, or alternatively a paperclip. Push into the small hole and gently pull the paperclip back out the hole, the tray will come with it. Insert your SIM into the tray the correct way round and put the tray with SIM back into the slot. Hope this helps!

    There is a small hole on the top of the phone near the lock button. Insert a thin strong object firmly into this hole. I suggest a paperclip or pin. This should cause the tray to pop out just a little so you can grab it with your fingers
