Switched on top oven which made a grinding noise, followed by a smoke and burning smell. Then switched off top oven and started the bottom oven. Fan was not rotating although oven light was on. After a short while the electrics tripped,
Repeated process which again resulted in electrics being tripped.
Any ideas what has caused this problem?

A tripped breaker or blown fuse on an electric oven or cook-top, combined with an element that has stopped working, is usually a sign of a shorted, then blown (if the fuse or breaker no longer fail) element.
If you know how to use an ohmeter, you can pull the element, disconnect the wires from each end, then measure the resistance between each end of the element, and each element to the outer sheath.
A good element has just a few ohms of resistance between the wire connection points, and infinite resistance from the wire connection points to the outer sheath. Any readings other than that means the element is bad and need's to be replaced.

SOURCE: AEG Competence Oven not working
If you are certain that the element is o/k, and it is not heating, then thwere are 2 possibilitues.
1- the oven thermostat could be faulty, whereby it is giving a feed to the element.
2-some ovens have a fan only setting, as well as heat and fan, make sure that it is not on a fan only setting.
Hope this helps.

There is a cooling fan in the cabinet of the oven which is not working either the fan is faulty or the controling cut in stat is, The fan should run when the grill is selected if does not it is more likely to be the fan/motor at fault.
