Driver is Microsoft version 5.1.2535.0 dated 7.1.2001 updated to Microsoft 5.1.2600.5512 xp-sp.080413-2108) 01.12.2012 The device will record digital pictures onto a DVD, read a DVD recorded with digital pictures files, and play music CDs just fine When a dvd movie is inserted Control Panel shows 0 bytes available, 0 bytes free, or no disc. Device Properties Hardware tab shows Manufacturer: (Standard CD-ROM Drives, Location: Location 0, Status: This device is working properly.

Try the following:

1. Go to the Dell.com support site and be sure you have the latest updates for your computer's operating system and the DVD drive, especially the DVD drive's drivers BIOS.

2. Make sure you have the software to play the movie, like Sonic, Windows Media Player, Power DVD, Quicktime, etc. and be sure they are the latest versions.

3. Depending on the movie format, not all DVD drives will play all DVDs. The most common discs are DVD-R and DVD+R and file types like *.avi, *.mpeg, *.mp4, *.mov and then commercial formats. Also try the movie in another machine or DVD player and see what happens.

open explorer and go to 'My Computer'
right click the DVD/CD-ROM Drive
click on the tab labeled 'Recording' (usually on the far right)
click the option that is labeled 'Enable CD recodring on this drive'
...and POOF, magic happens...

Dvd HL-DT-ST DVD+GWA4164B DOSEN'T WORK

Ok, you need to go to device manager and uninstall the dvd and all drivers.reboot...xp will tell you it found new hardware...allow it to auto update...it will reinstall the drivers.If this does not work.uninstall drivers for dvd reboot go to dvd manufctor web site and download new ones .Confused or need more help just get back to me.HAPPY NEW YEAR AND THANKS FOR USING FixYa.RICHARDM69

The laser that reads (or "burns") has failed.
Spend $30 to buy a new CD/DVD reader/writer.

my HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082N has a problem i cant up date the drivers in my computer it is missing so if in incert a cd it cant be found my HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082N has a yellow exclamation an status Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. I Have A : HL-DT-ST- DVD-RAM GSA-H22N DVD Burner That Works Fine With (CD Burning/ Reading) & (Data Burning/ Reading) But I Have A Very WIERD Problem With The DVD : Here I Go, When I Use Any Program To Burn DVD Like Nero, DVD Shrink Etc.. (It Appears That) The Movie Is Burning Well, Because In The Burning Process It Doesn't Says Something Like:Bad Disc, Not Succefully Burned Or Any Sign That The DVD Burner Is Damaged , Also When It Finish Recording You Can See The Data Burned In The Disc By The Lines It Forms BUT !! I Don't Know WHY The Fu$%@@ , When You Test The Movie In Any DVD Player , Comp OR Whatever THE MOVIE DOESN'T WORK.
