This unit started by itself the other morning, proceeded to get so hot that the glass turnstile broke and we just happened to be around when this occurred. Unplugged it, plugged it back in and it did the same. There was no time set on the unit and we had not started it at all. Seems that it could be a real fire hazard issue. It is still unplugged and will remain that way until we replace it.

Although your model number doesn't seem to show up, the NNS950-series units are powered by an high-voltage inverter. And yours has failed. While an inverter (switched-mode power supply) is more efficient from a power consumption standpoint, it is more complex, thus more statistically prone to fail. These should only be examined and worked on by someone who has the necessary technical qualifications. Seriously. Often the machine-soldered connections in a microwave inverter are too weak, so they eventually fail, especially if heat is high in the area. They sometimes fail catastrophically. When not catastrophically damaged, you may hear clicking or squealing and may smell an electrical odor, which is sometimes obscured by the cooling fan. Sometimes a whole new inverter is cheaper than the time and labor required to fix the old one. If a technician is willing and able to troubleshoot and repair the inverter to component level, it will may be expensive, but may be worth it, especially if he or she will resolder and reinforce connections as needed as part of a thorough repair. That could easily make your inverter beter than a new one! You might be able to get some verbal estimates if you call Panasonic-authorized appliance / microwave repair shops and ask then specifically about inverter component-level repair and simple inverter replacement costs for your exact model number.
SOURCE: MICROWAVE TURNS ON BY ITSELF AND RUNS FOR 3.5 MIN EACH TIME
I have the same problem microwave turns on by its self. It is 13 months old so the warrenty was up. I called Magic Chef and they said it was a fire hazzard and are going to send someone out to fix.
If you just put the fan blade back on, it will almost certainly fall off again.
The best bet is to slightly rough up the contact area of the shaft with sandpaper and use a little super glue to hold the blade assembly on the shaft, and let it set a few minutes before using it.
I always recommend that you use the hood vent exhaust fan when cooking on the stove top to keep heat, steam, and
grease out of the controls.
There
should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit
behind the
control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is
very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.
At
our Web site, we have a video
available showing how to remove a typical
over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.
You can find
helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full
model number from the tag on the oven here.
Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your
full model number from the tag on the unit) for more information & help.
We're
happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful
rating of our answer.

First, do not leave this machine plugged in until it is serviced. If this is a KHMS155LSS, there is a very high probability that you have a keypad short. This defect can cause the machine to start on its own at ANYTIME; while you are on vacation or at work or at night while you are sleeping etc. Contact Whirlpool Customer Service and ask for Safety Dept immediately. They will most likely send A&E (Sears) out to fix it. Although they will fix the problem, if the keypad fails again, the underlying logic self start defect is still present. You should be under warranty if it is above model. Please be polite, insistent, but polite. With KitchenAid's pathetic quality in recent years, their customer service reps get more then an earful. Also, please go to the Consumer Product Safety Commision website at www.cpsc.gov and post a Report Unsafe Products report. This will help get this model recalled before someone loses their home or life. I almost had a fire this past Monday, Labor Day, 9/7/09 when my machine self started at 3 AM with a package of bacon left in it to thaw at room temp for the morning. What a smokey mess. Chinese made garbage. Shame on Whirlpool. Long live Hobart!, please buy back KitchenAid and bring back the lost quality.

Apparently, Wednesday morning, the microwave started by itself while my wife was near the kitchen. She did not notice it initially but became aware of it sometime later - not sure how long but she did say that it was quite hot. Upon opening the door, she discovered that the turnstile glass was broken.
And the mircowave had also stopped. She called me asking if I had been using it that morning (I left the house early around 5:15 am), to which I replied, no. She then noticed that the microwave had started back up, with no prompting by her, and that it was again, getting very hot. She proceeded to unplug it and around lunch, our son-in-law electrician came over and they plugged it back in. Again, the thing started by itself, and with that, they decided that enough was enough, and unplugged it for good. Sears has offered to send a repairman out for $125 or so, but with it being 3 1/2 years old, and having this problem once, we are going to trash it. Our concern is that this might be a problem with this micorwave, and that perhaps others should be aware of it. If my wife had not been home it seems very possible that the microwave might have started a fire.
