Smelling gas at when stove is in prelight then going away

  • tkrogers Oct 12, 2008

Never really noticed the smell before. Only notice smell when preheating the oven part, everything seems fine. Although it seems to take much longer then usual to pre-warm the oven or I might be just guessing. The year? 4 to 5 years old. The make? Frigidaire free standing gas stove. The model? FGF378ACF

The smell remains as long as the oven is operating and gets stronger the longer it is on.

Welcome tkrogers,

You said, smelling gas at when stove is in Pre-light then going away.

In some stoves this is normal as long as it is a slight smell and it goes away when the stove or oven ignites.
You know gas really has no smell, but this smell is added for our safety!!
What is the Make, year ,and Model number of your range?

The gas must start somewhere until the flame ignites it.
So we smell a slight smell of gas until it burns.

Thanks,
Huuum

Is it normal to have a smell of gas in the initial start-up process using the stove top?

if you have electronic igniters you may get a wiff of gas at start up.
make sure your igniters are set properly so the burner lites right away and does not click click click for awhile before starting.

How do I empty the gas?

turn off the gas valve next to the stove at the source,, where it connects to the valve, ( the gas line going to the stove) loosen it a little and wait for it to bleed off,, its very low pressure and will smell for a second or two,, no need for worry ,, keep any open flame away ,, and vent your kitchen by opening a door or window,

My Kenmore gas stove has a light constant smell of gas coming from the oven. The oven also does not heat any longer. Burners work fine. Model 970

There is a problem with the regulator or the thermal bulb you need to call a repairman in to replace it, if you have a gas smell it is allowing the piolet light to have gas comming out and not lighting this is DANGROUS do not put it off get it looked at right away. This can kill you.

Charmglow Ventless Wall heater stinks - Literally!

some suggestions that may help: a sulfer type smell is the additive in the natural gas, kind of like eggs. if this is your smell, you have a gas leak. if any other propellents like hair spray, furniture polish, air fresheners are nearby, the vapors are burned by the stove and you can smell those, as well as a fine white powder building up on the stove. if a paint smell, then check to see if the back wall of the stove paint is burning away. if so, you can speed the process with a small hand held torch used for plumbing. when the paint is gone, the smell is gone. good luck.
