I did a quick search of google and it may NOT be the disk, in fact it's likely not, as I don't imagine Garmin would hard code the drive letter in the installation, as this is one reason why this error would occur. Or that a drive letter was changed between installations. If InstallShield has a problem the solution is as listed below, if these steps fail, then yes, as suggested contact the vendor.

Two solutions pretty much the same results, this one was grabbed from http://consumerdocs.installshield.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=Q110636&sliceId=1

This error has several causes. One cause is that the installation was created with a hard-coded path to a drive letter that does not exist on the machine. If this is the case then there is no way to make the installation install to a different drive letter. The software vendor must be contacted. Other causes include:
The CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive letter has changed since a previous install.
You have changed the drive letter of the hard disk that the operating system is installed on, for example, drive C.
This behavior may occur if a registry key contains an incorrect value in a Data field.

Because this error has different causes, you may have to check multiple items on your computer.
If drive letters have been changed on your computer, re-assign the original letter to the CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, or operating system drive. Follow the steps appropriate to your operating system:
Windows XP Users
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
In Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
In the Computer Management tree, click Disk Management.
Right-click the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, or the drive that contains the operating system, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
Click Change, and change it to the original drive letter. Click OK, and then click Close.
Windows 2000 Users
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
In Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
In the Computer Management tree, click Disk Management.
Right-click the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, or the drive that contains the operating system, and then click Change Drive Letter and Path.
Click Edit, and change it to the original drive letter. Click OK, and then click Close.
Windows NT Users
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Run dialog box, type windisk.exe in the Open field, and then click OK. This opens Disk Administrator.
Find the letter of the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, or the drive that contains the operating system that needs to be changed back to its original letter.
Right-click the drive letter and select Assign Drive Letter.
In the Assign Drive Letter dialog box, select the original drive letter from the drop-down list.
Close Disk Administrator, accept the changes, and restart the computer.

Verify that registry entries do not contain invalid drive letters that might be causing this error:
Important: The following steps require you to modify the Windows registry. Modifications to the Windows registry, if not done correctly, can cause serious problems to a Windows system. Before editing the registry, see How Do I Back Up Registry Keys on My Computer?
Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box opens.
In the Open field, type regedit, and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
In the Registry Editor, locate the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerShell Folders
In the right pane, note the values in the Data column of each entry. If any value contains a drive that is not correct for your computer, right-click the entry and select Modify.
Type the correct drive letter in the Value data field, and then click OK. For example, if one of the values is "X:Documents and SettingsAdministrator", the drive letter should be changed to a valid drive on the system, such as “C:Documents and SettingsAdministrator".
Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each entry whose Data value contains an incorrect drive.
Repeat steps 3 through 6 for each of the following registry keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersion

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerShell Folders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders

Close the Registry Editor and run the installation again.

If none of the above suggestions apply, this error might be happening because the installation author has hard-coded a path to a drive letter that does not exist on the machine. In this situation, you should contact the software vendor. Your software vendor can follow the suggestions in the following InstallShield Knowledge Base article to help determine what is causing the issue within the installation project:
Q107033 ERRDOC: Windows Installer Error 1327.
Keep in mind that the above article is meant for the installation author that has created the installation. Many of the suggestions do not apply to consumers trying to install software.
Another suggestion, although not a long-term solution, would be to create a partition on the local hard drive or map a network drive with the drive letter that is mentioned in the invalid drive error.

Another solution is as follows - I grabbed this from http://www.techsupportforum.com/microsoft-support/windows-xp-support/208762-error-1327-invalid-drive-i-help.html

Verify that registry entries do not contain invalid drive letters that might be causing this error:
Important: The following steps require you to modify the Windows registry. Modifications to the Windows registry, if not done correctly, can cause serious problems to a Windows system.
I strongly suggest that you backup the registry before editing it.

1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box opens.
2. In the Open field, type regedit, and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
3. In the Registry Editor, locate the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerShell Folders
4. In the right pane, note the values in the Data column of each entry. If any value contains a drive that is not correct for your computer, right-click the entry and select Modify.
5. Type the correct drive letter in the Value data field, and then click OK. For example, if one of the values is "X:Documents and SettingsAdministrator", the drive letter should be changed to a valid drive on the system, such as “C:Documents and SettingsAdministrator".
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each entry whose Data value contains an incorrect drive.
7. Repeat steps 3 through 6 for each of the following registry keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersion
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerShell Folders
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders
8. Close the Registry Editor and run the installation again.

You might have a problem with the disk. Take the disks back to place of purchase and ask for a replacement set, or else phone Garmin and explain you think you have a bad disk.

WE HAVE PURCHASED A ETREX GARMIN BLUE IN COLOR AND ARE WANTING TO KNOW HOW TO GET DOWN LOADS FOR MARINE WITH OUT PAYING FOR THE CD OR DOWNLOAD

You need Garmin MapSource (Trip and Waypoint Manager) and a data cable. Then for free maps visit the murky internet sites and beware of what you download. I would not bother with a topo or marine maps on a grey screen GPS anyway as the colour maps will not be easily understood on a grey screen.

I'm attempting to re-install maps on to my 7 year old Legend using the 'save to device' button. I get the following notice-'Your GPS does not support map transfer'. Why does my GPS no longer acccept maps...

Garmin Express cannot be used to transfer firmware to the etrex Legend. Use:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=25

Legend/Vista/Etex (H)Cx, any unit released prior to the Colorado) have map limits. They will only read 2gb of maps on a card (even if the card is larger) and will only read 2024 segments.

You would have to ask Garmin support as to why you cannot use the old disks. It may be irrelevant, but all methods of updating a Garmin do NOT work on all Garmins regardless of age. Even a utility that does work may work only if it is the version applicable to that generation of Garmin GPS units.

FYI, even if you have lifetime maps (free), you will only get free replacements for the maps that came upon the Garmin. An Australian Garmin with free maps will not allow you to get free maps while in the USA. You would have to pay for such.

HOW DO YOU LOAD MAPS TO THE GPS UNIT?

You will need to load the MapSource software on your PC then load the maps into MapSource. After the maps are loaded and unlocked you can plug your GPS into your PC with the USB cable and load the maps.

Geocaching with Garmin Etrex Legend CX

The preloaded maps are VERY generic, mostly major highways. They are not useful for geocaching.

The good news is that you can download free topo maps created by a very generous Canadian soul, Dale Atkin. The maps are free but donations are accepted. He is also working on US topo maps. I've used Ibycus and Garmin topo maps and prefer the Ibycus version.
If this solves your situation, please come back and rate our answer. Thankyou.

Map down load

You can view segments of the maps at the Garmin site and it will show you how much detail there is.
Go to http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/topous.jsp#
and on the far right side of the page, you'll see a link to Mapsource Map Viewer Topo USA 2008. Click on that and zoom in to your area.
Yes, you can download the map segments to your unit.

Garmin etrex legend

I had this problem today, updated the software, now the unit seems to be working perfectly. The unit "crashes" (single line down screen center) as soon as it get enough satelites to work with WAAS.

Go to Garmin site for software updates. Download and install the WebUpdater. Once or unit is hooked up to your computer and you have internet access, the software will download and update your GPS with the latest software fixes. I had software Version 3.7. For the Legend, Version 3.9 fixes the problems with WAAS.
