My husband is not thrilled with the new HD converter box remote. The buttons are way too small for even a stylist! I purchased a Phillips Universal Remote SRU3303WM/17 to sontrol the HD converter, our GE TV, and our Magnavox DVDR+RW. I have managed to set the TV codes, but when I have attempted to input the DVDR+RW codes, nothing happened. I have tried to "search for codes", but the instructions require that the channel change for successful code installation. While doing this the TV must be on to see the channel change, and the remote will actually change the TV channel at a certain point. I have not tried to deprogram the remote and program the DVDR+RW first, but I am thinking that won't help. Also, I am now unsure if this will even operate the APEX converter box as I am not seeing any converter box codes. Any suggestions?

Remotes.com isn't cheap but has the best coverage I've seen and has a list of Apex remotes to choose from.
Since you didn't include your Apex model number, you'll have to look at them and choose.

BTW, there is no such thing as a 'universal' remote anywhere and never will be.
At best, they are multi-brand.

same problem. Sony tv w/ antenna to hd upgrade box by apex (from best buy), and phillips universal. the list w/ the remote does not include working apex code, or any apex codes under cable box
