My display has horizontal 1/4 inch bands which look like a picket fence. When I am in Explorer or some other app often times after I have placed the cursor on the tool bar, etc. it will turn yellow. I can still see everything and thus far everything seems to operate okay. Things done: 1. System restore 2. Drivers reloaded 3. Numerous reboots 4. Same problem in safe mode 5. No indication of anything not working correctly in Systems Folder

Does the Compaq logo appear when you try to start the computer? Try pressing F10 several times after turning on the power. This should start the "recovery console", which will give you some options for restoring Windows. If the recovery console doesn't start up, there is a good possibility that your hard drive or power supply module may be defective. In that case, you will probably need professional assistance to diagnose the problem.

SOURCE: pc died suddenly. dies during reboots.
First step would be to remove the case and check all cables, ram chips and add-in cards (in slots on the main board): make sure everything is attached firmly.
Also check all your fans inside the case and the metal finned heatsincs undernieth them: they need to be operating when the computer is on and free from dirt & dustbunnies all the way into those metal crevaces: a can of canned air will blow the mess from the cracks. Make sure you follow the instructions on the canned air as tipping the can while using it can cause some damage, also make sure the computer is unplugged when you use it.
The symptoms you are describing could be the system overheating which would shut the computer off to save something from frying.
Over heating is the #1 cause of system crashes. please try these steps and post again here...
Regards..
