Hello, wifi is a sort of WLAN conection. you need a wireless router to be able to use wifi. there are two ways to connect to the internet on the touch viva. 1st way is by the sim card and that costs you a lot of money!!! the other way is by a wlan router, you can access to the internet as long as you want is you have a flatrate. My good tipp: switch off the gprs connection, it will only cost you a lot of money. you will still be able to make phone calls. Ilost about 60$ (i mean it!) by trying to access to the internet by gprs.

I would start with a Master Reset. That's the best place to start.
Pulling the battery doesn't really do anything but fix little problems.
Resetting the phone deletes all data, including downloaded applications, and resets the phone back to its initial state. Press HOME > MENU, then tap Settings > Security > Factory data reset. On the Factory data reset screen, tap Reset phone and then tap Erase everything. To reset the phone using phone buttons, with the phone turned off, press and hold the HOME, END CALL/POWER, and BACK buttons. The reset process will start after a few seconds

Hello Derek,
Connecting Wi-Fi in HTC Desire Cell Phone
From the Home screen, press , and then tap Settings > Wireless & networks.Select the Wi-Fi check box to turn Wi-Fi on. The phone then scans for available wireless networks.Tap Wi-Fi settings. The network names and security settings of detected Wi-Fi networks are displayed in the Wi-Fi networks section. If the wireless network you want to connect to is not in the list of detected networks, scroll down the screen, and then tap Add Wi-Fi network. Enter the wireless network settings, and then tap Save.Tap the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to. If you selected an open network, you will be automatically connected to the network. If you selected a network that is secured with WEP, enter the key and then tap Connect.
Your Nokia phone will see 802.11 b/g signals. Is your home access point broadcasting one of these?
