Which specific Uniden DECT 6.0 phone do you have? There are a number of them. Uniden has the manuals available here: http://www.uniden.com/bin/venda?ex=co_disp-view&bsref=uniden&scat=dectphones_mnl . Phones are listed in alphabetical and numerical order.
If the answering system is off, turn it on before proceeding to the following steps.
If you are at home, there are usually two methods to access the answering system. Some Uniden phones let you set the outgoing message from the base or the handset. Others will only let you set the message from the handset. (Calling in remotely is more complicated.)
To access the answering system menu from a handset, on some models, push the Mute/Messages button. Then let your current message play or press 5 to stop the recorded announcement. Then either use the up/down arrows to select Record New Greeting (or the number that matches the sub-menu item). It's number 8 on the DECT1480. Then wait for the prompt (tone or "Record Greeting") and then speak into the handset clearly. Press 8 to stop recording and press End to save the message. Press 6 to select the outgoing greeting if a default greeting is available.
On other Uniden DECT phones, press Menu and go to Ans Setup. Then choose the line for the greeting (if it's a multi-line phone) and then select Record Greeting. Press Start, wait for the prompt and then press Stop when done. Press Stop again to save the message. If there is an optional pre-recorded greeting, use the Greeting Option submenu to select the greeting to play. (This applies to the DECT4086.)
From the base, you'll do something similar. However, you should stay about 9" from the microphone while recording. Messages can be between 30 seconds and 3 minutes 30 seconds for most systems.
I hope this helps.
