Hi trev-n-tina,

With the indulgence of melnavz,

Your concern is a common problem with Akai, Samsung and some other rear projection TV units.

Normally this involves the Convergence ICs/circuitry and would require replacement. In some case, this would involve coolant fluid leak.

Repair of course would require that you be familiar with electronic circuitry and components, use of a DVM, a soldering iron and a service manual. Should you be uncomfortable going this route, you may need to seek the services of a qualified professional. This might really be to your advantage since parts sourcing may be a bit of a problem as well as the alignment procedures after repair.

I doubt if the parts (if ever available) would be that expensive. It may be the service fees that would be of concern. In some instances the parts would only be available after some time (due to backlog of orders). With the downtime and repair time in mind as well as the total cost of repair, perhaps you may want to reconsider repair and simply purchase a new one to save you the trouble. I have to emphasize, the problem is repairable but other issues have to be considered.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Hello:

Yes is is your convergence IC's. One has gone bad, but consider replacing both of them because if one has gone bad then the other is not far behind. They are located on the middle board of your set. They are mounted on a large heatsink, the part # should be STK-392-040. Replace these and your set will work fine again.

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projeciton sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you are handy and can follow directions. You can get complete repair kits from TvRepairKits.com or click here. They have put together DIY repair kits that include the OEM parts and step by step photo instructions for each repair. If you are not handy or can't follow directions we would suggest calling a shop.

Picture is bowed inward and looks like a 3d image without the glasses. I also have a green, red, and blue line curving across the top of the picture.

Looks like the focusing lens may have moved a bit or the projector lamp has gone weak. Get a technician to check up the projector.

There's very little you can do here.

Picture looks like 3D without 3D glasses on???

The cost I don't know, but this can be fixed. I'd say shop around a bit. Make sure the repair person is certified for your TV's manufacturer. There are generally 3 lamps in projection T.V.'s, Red, Green, and Blue. They have to be aligned for the TV to project a clear picture. A credible TV repairman should be able to fix it. Depending on if it's new enough to be under warranty they may cover it as well. Really the only reason to get rid of it is if you want to get a new TV anyway. Depends on the cost of having the lamps aligned.
