From the sounds of this and researching other issues similar to this one, it can either be the battery or the switch to turn it off and on. First clean all contacts for the battery and charger with some Isopropal alchohol or similar cleaner to insure there is good contact. Next we want to make sure to check that the charger (adapter) is working or not, you may use a volt meter to check it out or use another charger to make sure....... further you may follow the step below -
    1. Remove the battery pack from Vacuum.
    2. Hold down the power button for five seconds.
    3. Reinstall the battery to reset the system.
    4. Plug the Charger directly into vacuum.
    5. Charge the battery untill the power light is solid green again and keep the vacuum on the charger for an additional 72 hours (3 days). Important: Do NOT interrupt this charging cycle.
If further you have the same problem it means it's time to change the old battery with new one.
If we get nothing from the charge then the switch is most likely the issue. How old is this unit? Did you know that Dirt Devil has a 3 year warranty on these?

The Unit I am not exactly sure how old it is... I got it gently used but Never had an issue until all of a sudden.. Not Sure When These KONEs Were Made.

Hi, You could contact the manufacture with your serial number and model number to get a manufacture date if there is not one printed on the label. The newr models which sell for around $39.00 actually have a better battery which lasts much longer than the older one. Have you had a chance to check the charger and battery for voltages with a meter?

If it is the switch, you can try the manufacture but these are no longer made, sorry for the last post but I found out they are discontinued and now they are making the Kurve, which is the same cleaner but in a diffferent shape. I did find one on Amazon.com used for &28.00, which would be checaper to get one of these for parts if you want to keep yours. I tried to contact dirt devil for parts availability on this and all I got was a message to contact customer support, so I am guessing new parts probably arent available.

Hi I also found this statement while looking for parts.
As mentioned, the Kone operates off of a rechargeable battery. This battery is covered under a 3 year warranty, should the battery become defective. Replacement batteries are sold at authorized Royal/Dirt Devil repair centers. The battery replacement and repair work must be done by an authorized dealer in order for the product to remain under warranty. Find the nearest service center by contacting Royal Customer Service at 1-800-321-1134.

When you first get the Kone, be sure to charge the battery for a full 24 hour period prior to first use. In order to charge the battery, the Kone must be turned off. Place the unit into its charger base. Be sure to line up the slot in the back of the unit with the tab it fits into within the charging base, much like a cordless phone. Plug the cord into an electrical outlet. You will know the vacuum is successfully charging when the unit's charging light comes on and remains on. Charge the cleaner for 16 to 24 hours. The charge light will simply remain on while charging. It will not change color or shut off to indicate when the unit has completed charging.

If the Kone stops working, be sure to check and clean the contacts between the unit and the charging base. Keeping these clean, will extend the life of the vacuum and help the unit to charge more quickly. Be sure to keep your unit fully charged in order for it to operate and clean to its ability. If you discover your vacuum needs a repair and there is not an authorized service representative near, you can mail the unit to the nearest repair facility at your expense and authorize its repair. Be sure to check out the dirtdevil.com website first for troubleshooting and assistance in servicing the Kone vacuum and its battery.

THe Charger is Good.. Though accessing the battery is a little bit Harder than Expected..
Easier Said than done.. Remove the Battery from the Vacuum is not enough explanation when the battery is not even visible, This is the KONE. Not sure How to get to the battery to remove it....

Hi Ross, the procedure for the battery removal is as follows,

Locate the battery housing unit on the underside of the handheld vacuum. Use a Phillip's head screwdriver to remove the screw that is holding the covering plate in place. Once unscrewed, remove the covering plate.

    3
Remove the battery pack. You will need to gently pull to disconnect the connector that is holding the wires together. Do not pull hard, as you could rip the wires out, which will cause irreversible damage.

    4
Place a new battery pack in place. The Dirt Devil Kone uses a 7.2 Volt NiMH battery pack. Connect the connector by pushing the battery pack connector into the wire connector.

    5
Place the plate over the battery housing unit. Screw the screw back into place.

    6
Place the handheld vacuum back into the charging station. Allow the battery to fully charge for 24 hours before using.

sounds like it may be cross threaded , or bits of grit holding it tight ,try tapping round the rim with screwdriver handle to see if it will loosen anything that's holding it ,then get someone else to help you hold one end and you hold the other end and twist..

How do i open my dirt devil kone to empty it?

Grab the upper and lower conic sections, one in each hand. Twist the lower section clockwise to remove from the upper section. The filter is in the section - remove and empty, then replace and twist back to close and lock.

I can't get the charging light to turn on.

I have the same problem, after our building had a electricity problem. The electricity spiked when the utility company came to fix a problem. Several adapters in our apartment seem to be affected. Like my Kone, my dirt devil detailer had the same problem: charging light didn't come on, and while it charges, it only gets up to weak power. I got a new charger/adapter and when I plugged it into the base, the charging light was working again.
