Tapes will not play

Camcorder will power on, fast forward and rewind okay, but when PLAY is pressed, only a blue screen appears in the viewer.

The tape counter at the top right is all dashes " -- -- -- ".

Likewise, we can hit RECORD, and the images appear in the viewfinder, but when we rewind to play, only the blue screen appears.

We tried resetting the camera per Sony's online instructions, but no help. They suggested repair service for this problem.

Problem with the heads?? Would cleaning do the trick??

Wont play my tapes will rewind and fast forward but they appear as blank tapes after using a tape that was eaten by my last video camera, do you think its something to do with my video head or whatever...

There might have been some sort of residue on the "bad tape" that you played in this camcorder. If you are only getting a blue screen when trying to play back your tapes now, you should try a head cleaning tape. Play the cleaning tape for 5 to 10 seconds and then try your tape again. If it is not all better, repeat this process (only in intervals of 5 to 10 seconds at a time). A head cleaning tape is a little more abrasive than your regular tapes. This will probably do the trick for you. Sony makes an excellent miniDV Head Cleaner. If you do not have one, your local camera shop may or you can find them online reasonably priced.

Hope this has helped you.

We can see the image in fast forward or rewind but and no audio

Many parts are still available on these camcorders however if it needs a video head for example, and it's not avaiable it may be a better idea to get another 8mm camcorder off ebay, or maybe a pawn shop. just test them with a new blank tape first before putting your family tapes in.

The following solution was posted on Whirpool.

Turn on the unit with no disc in the unit. The No Disc message should be visible
Press the following keys in this sequence
Repeat (not the A-B Repeat, just the plain Repeat)
Fast rewind button (just below the Disc Menu button)
Play button
Down button
Down button
Right Button

The number 9 should now appear towards the left of the screen.

Open then close the disc draw

Turn off the unit and then on again. You should now be able to play DVDs from any region

VHS tape was playing . After stoping does not play. Other tape will play

The idler wheel (that only drives the tape in play or scan modes) is slipping too much (very common problem). Try verify this by putting the tape in play then immediately press the fast fwd or rewind buttons to scan the tape. On older machines, the idlers used rubber friction tires - on newer ones, a clutch. Either replace the tire or increase the spring tension on the clutch.
Hope Ya Fix It.
