VHS picture won't work but DVD is fine

The Machine is a MAGNAVOX MWD2206 and it's about two years old.
We put a VHS in to watch it, but it hadn't been rewinded; we were at the ending credits and those worked fine. We stopped it and then rewinded it, but when it was done and we pressed play, all we got was snow, even when we fast-forwarded. Tried another VHS that worked just fine last week, and it did the same thing. The DVD, however, works just fine, so I don't think it has anything to do with the cables?

I have a similar problem, the VCR tape will only record about 5 minutes and turns off, and the VCR will only play back about 5 minutes and turns off. This happened on more than one tape. Any suggestions on where I purchase a VHS head cleaning cassette?

Power off when inserting vhs tape

I had this problem when copying an old family vhs tape. I had to unscrew the top of the magnavox to access the vhs tape. Then, I gently removed the tape and replaced the cover. After winding the tape back, I put it in the player and immediately pushed fast forward for about 3 seconds before hitting play followed by d.dubbing. I was able to make a copy of the tape and did not damage my original.

When I play DVD's my tv screen gets a rectangle box on it, the VHS is fine, it's just the DVD player.

Yes! you are right, this almost sounds like a captions problem, check the DVD/VCR Combo menu, if it has captions turn it off using your remote.

Magnavox mwd 2206 dvd vcr player....shuts off with eject word across screen.

On a unit I checked with this same symptom, removing the top cover allows the unit to stay on and operate normally. There is some sort of sensor at the left middle of the chassis, which, when unblocked by any opaque object, allows the unit to remain on. A temporary fix (not advisable) would be to replace the top cover with a piece of clear plastic or taut saran wrap (no vent holes needed). It's unclear exactly where/what that sensor is from a cursory test. This is a work in progress on someone else's machine that I lack full access to.
