The described solution isn't working yet for me. When I pop open the battery lid, a beep sounds. Is that supposed to happen?
I have the same problem. Where is the shutter speed?
First, my screen was black and depressing shutter button would not take a picture. Taking video would result in black video. But I tried the suggested solution and the situation gradually improved. So, I think the problem (iris stuck) is identified correctly, but maybe their are also some other things 'stuck'.
Is there some way to clean, or warm, or de-humidify, or whatever, the camera so that all parts work smoothly?

can u possibly do a set by set which button to press direction, please. I'm not too keen on what you mean by the shutter button, do you mean the take a picture button?

I also have the same problem. Sending it back to Canon to see what they say. I tried the solution posted with no luck. I will let yall know as soon as Canon gets back to me. With everyone having the same problem, you would think Canon would issue a recall or repair cameras with this issue free of charge.

Same problem - worked after 7th time! Â I had to slap it too - what have you got to lose anyway? Â It came back kind of dim so I repeated the process a few more times and now it's working fine.
Have same problem. Camera was used everyday for 2.5 yrs until 1 yr ago when the black LCD & viewfinder started. Photo settings do appear on the screens when set to appropriate "DISP" modes, but no picture. I tried your "TV" shutter suggestion at least 15X with no success. I do notice that when the camera is turned on into "shooting" mode, the lens is noisier than I remember as it extends out. It may be dragging a little and may be part of the problem. I tried to video record - sound ok, but still no picture on playback either on the LCD screen or on my Plasma TV using the Video/Audio out jack & cable.
Although it did not work for me, thanks for the suggestion. Any other suggestions?
Based on cost to fix by Canon last yr, I bought a S5IS a yr ago, and I now a SX10IS.

I want to thank you guys. I thought my camera was ready for the trash. I wish I had found this site before I purchased another cheaper camera. I tried your fix and my display started working on the second try. My only question, is there any way to prevent the aperture from sticking in the future. Thanks again for a great "cheap fix".

I have the black screen problem. Sometimes I have to turn on and off the camera for three to five times before I can take a picture. I tried out suggestion once and the camera works again! Thanks a million.
Can you not take pictures, or is it that a completely black image results if you do press the shutter button?
In the case where you get a black image, the following may be of help:
This is a common problem in older Canon S2 IS cameras,
especially ones that have not been regularly used. What happens is that
the lens iris gets stuck at a small aperture. Most often you can get
function back. Here's how:
Turn the camera on in shooting mode.
Turn the mode selector to shutter priority ("Tv").
Use the four-way button on the back to set the shutter speed to 15 seconds. That's right, 15 seconds.
Press the shutter release. Count to seven, then pop open the battery compartment.
Wait several seconds, then close the battery compartment.
You
may need to repeat the above sequence several times to unstick the
iris. If that does not accomplish it, you will likely have to send the
camera in for repair.
Once you have it working again, you should use the camera regularly to keep it from sticking again.

Well, I had the same problem with my Canon S3 IS. Was skeptical, but tried this solution. And, what do you know, it works!!! Thank you so much, saved me money on having it repaired. By the way, I had to do the solution about 10 times. So very happy now!
