We have Magic chef 31001saw (1995?) Recently the oven will not light.
Husband says - ingniter glows hot, but valve will not open to allow gas in. Could this be a bad thermocouple?

If it's an older model with a true pilot light you turn on the gas at supply line valve, open oven door, remove bottom panel to access pilot and burner. Sometimes it's easier to remove broiler drawer on these models but regardless take a lighter and light pilot. Most models are electronic ignitions which if you have it probably needs replaced if it doesn't ignite the burner in under a minute or minute and 15 secs. It could also be a bad thermostat if the burner ignites within the time period described above
The problem with your oven is that ignitor is weak and not drawing enough amprage to open the gas valve, the gas you smell was since the ignitor does come on it allowed the gas valve to open a wee bit but since ignitor is weak it wont allow gas valve to open fully. I know you going to doubt that what i'm telling you is correct, i base my diagnosis on my 30 years experience as a appliance repair technician.Replace ignitor and enjoy your baked meal
Hi,
The problem is with the ignitor 9 out of 10 cases. On oven's with hot surface ignition the ignitor act's like a resistor, (not litrally, just an example to help) when it is good and glowing almost white hot, it will only then open the gas valve to lite the burner. (don't let the fact that it is glowing to a lesser degree fool you as often it does with do-it-
yourselfers or even technician's not familiar with them) A common ignitor for Maytag ovens is 77001258 and usually retail at $40-$50. Check with your local part supplier or any number of on-line vendors using your model & serial number.
Hope this help's, if so please take a second and rate the solution I provided for you here at fixya...and spread the word.
Thank you and good luck.

Hi, Even tho the ignitor is glowing, it can be bad. It has to pull enough amps to open the gas valve. This is very common problem. I can get you the part and or prices if you could get me the model#
