I have a belkin g f5d7234-4 v5. It crashed and stopped working for w while (not sure what happened). So I reset it. It seems to be working fine for the laptops. Secured network and all. Problem is when trying to connect our newer devices (ipod, tablets, etc) the original password I put on the system isn't being recognized. I tried the numbers on the unit itself and still nothing. How do I get my router to recognized new devices? How do I reset the password?

SOURCE: belkin g router no password unsecured connection

It is not that easy.

Routers have administrative passwords but they only control who can update the router's configuration not who can logon to the wireless network. It is good to assign one. It would also be good to write down your router's configuration -- the special stuff because when you foget the password and reset the router normally both the password and your precious configuration are reset to factory default.

Securing your wireless communication which is what I believe you want to do can be done in several ways.

First by encrypting the communications. In that process both your ROUTER and your WIRELESS ADAPTERS must be configured with the same passphrase or key to encrypt/decrypt the data being transmitted. This is like a password but not one you enter when you want to logon.

The second is to use a quasi-unique identifier called a MAC address in your network adapter (incl Wireless). If you choose this approach you have the burden of placing each and every MAC address permitted to use your network in the router's configuration and only those in the router's configuration can use your network.

Many people opt for the encryption without the MAC address filtering (checking). You still have some planning to do. Your router may support any combination of no encryption, WEP or WPA. WPA has several options but for our discussion we will consider one exclusively for now WPA_PSK with TKIP which is nost often used in home networks. Before you can choose you must review all wireless adapters to connect to the network. Which of the above options do they support? Hopefully all of our equipment supports one at least one option WEP or WPA_PSK TKIP. If we have a choice and guests are not an issue one would probably prefer to choose WPA_PSK TKIP but WEP is alwaus better than nothing when you want to secure your network.

It is always wise especially if you are a beginner to write down the before and after values as you make changes so you can reverse them if needed. Also the record of the final answers is a good thing to have saved in a secure but accessible place should you forget the administrators password and have to reset the router.

With all that planning done we can begin to install our wireless security plan. If you wish to minimize the impact on others you may want to walk through the router configuration changes for the wireless security on paper and then in the router without making nay changes. You should then configure one wireless adapter as a test box. Then the interruption begins when you configure the router and test the connection. If it fails and begins to become too long for the poeple who share the network you reconfigure the router back and they are happy and you can either reconfigure the test machine back or continue to research changes until you are ready to test again. Only after the test machine and the route are working do you begin to reconfigure any other wireless adapters.

Now you know the magic words to look for in the various manuals as you are planning to secure your network. If you need assistance please respond with additional comments and we will develop steps to achieve the process you wish to complete.

SOURCE: Cannot connect other devices to my router

You reset it to open, no encryption and it still didn't work? HMMM. You are able to get your PS3 online? but can't connect your laptop and desktop? Are you hard wiring the desktop to the router? or are you trying to connect it wirelessly? If you are configuring your router with either the laptop or desktop, make sure the IP settings on your connection manager are set to the correct domain under Local Area Connection Properties, like 192.168.1.226, or something similar. Login to the router with your admin credentials. Make sure in your configuration (as instructed in your manual) that you have the router time set correctly so the lease time for your devices aren't expired. Apply settings. After exiting your router configuration screen, go back to your connections manager, either wireless connection, or ethernet adapter in your network connections folder, and under the General tab of the Local Area Connection Properties, change the properties of your TCP/IP client back to "Obtain an IP Address Automatically." Click "Close" and your computer should show "Connected."

SOURCE: belkin F5D7234-4 i have great connection but

  1. A very useful tool to use for wireless issues is xirrus, http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php If you can copy the program onto the PC install and run, this test if your adapter is working and also will display all the networks broadcasting in your area. and what channel they are using. If you are also using one of the same channels it may be interfernace - Have a look at the channels being used - loginto the router and change channel to one that is not used - try and use channel 1 or 6 or 11
  2. Wireless Security:- Loginto the router, this may seem difficult, but its really straight forward, - however you will need to know how to login into your make of Router - A manual cna be found here http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app/product/list/q/routers/ choose, G in first drop down and then the model in the second dropdown. That will explain how to login. Once you have logged into the router main page, goto the wireless section and remove any wireless security, this maybe a simply as a box and click disable. --- Now see if the machine run faster on the wireless. This may be a direct link to the manual http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app/product/detail/p/387
  3. safemode:- Try to boot the PC into "safe mode with networking". To do this switch the PC on and now as it starts keep tapping the F8 key untill a menu appears, from that menu choose "safe mode with networking". If that now connects at a fast speeds - post back a comment and if that's the case, We can try doing a "clean boot" and try to identify the startup or process that is causing the issue
  4. It may be you need a firmaware upgrade from here http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/301 also includes instructions on how to do the upgrade. This may be a direct link to the firmware http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app/product/detail/p/387

Either you have not configure the Wireless SSID or your router is faulty. You can use the easy setup using the CD or configure the router by going to the default IP address. Do read the setup manual first.
