There are multiple ways to use the scanner on your Mac. If your Mac recognizes the scanner as a device, then you can use the scan from the Mac using Preview or Image Capture apps (in your Applications folder). You can also use Picasa by going to the import function and finding the scanner and try it from there. If you are having issues getting the HP scanner to recognize the Apple device. When you install the Full Feature software for your printer, you receive the HP Photosmart Studio imaging software and the HP Utility printer management software. You can use either of these programs to scan, and can create custom settings in both.
In general, use HP Photosmart Studio to scan pictures if you want to edit them to adjust color, crop, remove red eye, etc. Use HP Utility to set up scan tasks you use often, such as scanning to a certain folder or software application, or attaching the scanned item to an email. If your printer has a display, you also use HP Utility to designate which scan tasks should appear on the printer display menu when you start a scan from the controls on the printer.
Make sure that the printer is connected to the computer. Turn it on. Place the item with the print side down on the scanner glass.
Use HP Photosmart Studio to start a scan: Click the HP Photosmart Studio icon in the Dock. Click the Scan button. Select your HP product in the Device Name list, if necessary, and then click Continue. From the Scan Profiles screen, click either Pictures or Documents. Click Profile Settings , and then adjust any settings in the Capture , Adjust , and Page Options (for documents) or Enhance (for pictures) tabs as appropriate. Click Scan. When prompted, select Yes or No to add another page to the scan. The scan preview opens then click Return to close the preview and save the scan. Type a name for the scan in the Save As box. Click the Format drop-down list, select the file format you want, and then click Save.
" no scan options refer to device documentation for trouble shooting" you need to open up either solution center or hp director, go to settings, scan settings, then scan to set up and look for the option front panel destination a window should open to reveal scan short cuts and one titled front panel list. you need to select the shortcuts click add and once satisfied click on "update device".

The scanned image is saved in your Pictures folder in your home directory and opened in Preview.
Note: These are the default options. They can be changed in the Image Capture toolbar.
The best way to scan documents from the scanner to your computer is to use HP Photosmart Essential. If you don`t already have it installed it can be downloaded from the HP site. Once in the program it is very simple to follow. It is basically a point and click operation.

If possible, find the software disk that came with the printer, and reinstall. One of the options should be to scan from the scanner to the computer. Just make sure that option is selected on re-install, and that the necessary communication cables for that option are installed.
I'm working on a Mac and bought my printer in Japan, but when you do the scan, the machine does scan the whole piece. You need to drag the dotted lines to the proper edges of the scan. That will give you a full scan.
