The switch is broken. If you are handy, remove the old switch and match it up at a hardware store or a Vacuum repair shop. It shouldn't cost much to have it replaced by a proffessional either.

Vacuum won't stay powered without holding the button down.

This is over a year too late, but perhaps this will help other people in your situation. Here is how the switch assembly should go together:

Dyson dc25 animal - head won't stay on the floor - doesn't seem to be rotating correctly

I am having the same issue in 2022. Dyson says I have to buy a new machine. EVERYTHING else works perfectly and I can vacuum the floors IF I hold it almost upright. Who can clean a 2,000 square foot house with hardwood, tile and carpet like that?? Not me! I cannot believe this can't be fixed in this day and age. Am I to take it to the recycle center? What about the perfectly good 8 attachments I have for it? If I get a new one, it will come with 4 or 6 of the same attachments. This is a total waste of money in this day and age -- to say nothing of disposing it in the landfill!!! I AM NOT HAPPY with Dyson at the moment.

Power won't stay on unless you hold the button down . How can I fix this and what is the problem?

You can't fix this problem yourself - a repair dealer needs to open up the button and inspect the power switch - call the Dyson helpline, they will find the closest authorized dealer in your area and if your machine is still under warranty it'll probably fixed under warranty for you.
