hello, I am darshan from India, by profession I am a computer programmer.
I have a LG DR 165 dvd recorder. It has a 4 hours of recording capacity from each DVD. So it can record 4 programs of 1 hour on it. Some days ago when I record 2 programs of Discovery Channel on it and when I started my DVD recorder to record 3rd program, it displayed msg "Unkown disc format want to initialize the disc ?". I found this type of messages randomly on it. Specially when disc is multisession and disc is not finalized. May be my recorder can not find the point, where to start the new recording. Some times also find this msg in finalized disc too. I found this problem since last 1 week. I purchased my recorder on 9th May 2007. It was working very good for more than 1 year.
sir, please guide me to troubleshoot this problem in simple english.

Hello friends, i have been using this machine for last 2 years nearly. it showed me lot of problems. i also found yours once. this lg recorders reading lens is very poor. it reads when disc is complete free of scratches and dust. it's not possible for always, even-though, it feels very hard and takes more times to recognize disc.
so i found the solution for this problem from kind of video site that you should replace the lens of the recorder with scratch readable lens like Philips had. it will work as good as possible.
another one is that if you open this unit manually by yourself, you could find that reading unit looks like DVD writer comport, and have the pin bunches like it. so i not strongly suggest you to replace that whole unit with New DVD writer, and it may work like computer reading all files. i don't try this, but looking for it. if you get, try it.

i am vijay kumar. my recorder had identical problem. the service engineer replaced the recorder assembly. After few weeks of operation the problem reoccured. is there no other solution for this problem. lg may advise.
